Hi Tim

Is this still available??

https://vintage-radio.com.au/default.asp?f=3&th=797

Should be easy to retune it to 3210kHz if you can get hold of it.

Hi Ian,

Yes certainly on the big side isn't it?

I'll make some enquiries.

Many thanks.

Well ,The equipment seems to be working ok but realistically , I don't believe there is much point to broadcast during weekend evenings local time as there aren't sufficient listeners and support to continue, especially at low erp. I'll try to track down an HF amp to boost the erp.

From Friday 17th 11.59PM (23.59 LOCAL) through to the 18th Saturday , I'll run an overnight test to see if anyone internationally registers a signal. I'll then make a decision on whether to continue locally. Interest from 9265kHz last year yielded some interest but also not really enough to reconsider continuing.

It isn't surprising that Radio Australia ceased transmission as has the ABC shortwave in the NT. ABC management is old technology ignorant. I believe that the ABC should have kept the local shortwave service on air as satellite receivers usually can't be portable. I'm not sure why VAST hasn't looked into portable satellite radios, perhaps, cost might be a factor. As for radio Australia, well, to be cut completely I think is a mistake , especially for the pacific area. Many Island communities don't get factual information through local media and /or have reception problems on usual FM and AM frequencies.

I'm thinking the new ABC management think new technologies will solve problems through internet and satellite technologies but again not everyone in the pacific and inland Australia can even get internet especially when it needs to be portable. As for local shortwave or domestic shortwave in areas where there is already ample media selection, not many people know about it, hence a lack of listeners.

I listened last weekend just gone. Friday, low-level unmodulated carrier. Saturday 8pm, the same. Sunday 8:12 & 9:11, nothing heard.

9265 provided by far the most readable signal although it does start slowly fading out soon after nightfall.

Hi Robbbert,

Thanks for the reports,and appreciated.

Yes one has to wonder whether the low power operation is even worth it.

Yes the WINB signal wasn't too bad but as you said, faded out at your QTH. That transmitter there was a 50kW Collins beamed to Australia with a 20db gain wire beam from Red Lion Pennsylvania so perhaps that will be the better way to go ,albeit, a shorter on air time. I had it for two hours at Halls Creek before fade out ,but, that was with an end fed wire about 45metres long about 10 metres in the air.

This past Sunday I had it about 9PM our time (from a property 20km North of Gunnedah with a similar listening experience, but had noted some SSB interferance and at odd times a carrier blocking the frequency.

There are other US broadcasters with a better signal in Australia , namely, WRMI , which can be heard (In our evenings) at good to excellent clarity on 7730kHz , 7780kHz , 9955kHz and 11580kHz. I've heard it in our mornings on 15770kHz reasonably well.

I'll keep you updated on what way I go Smile

Many Thanks

Hi Robbbert , Carl and members,

I've moved everything to Gunnedah NSW and newly licenced for 5045kHz.

5045kHz will happen when I buy a transmitter and antenna. Hopefully soon.

3210kHz is off the air and the licence has been surrendered.

3210kHz will re-appear in Northwest NSW but not under my name. I hope to lease this transmitter when available (Negotiations underway).

As there is minimal interest in shortwave in this country, I will further assess whether to continue with it but my interest is still there so it will probably happen Smile

I also hope to attract some paying producers from around the world.

Take care everyone Smile.

Thanks for the info. Let us know if or when transmissions will recommence. You might need to make the situation clear on your website as it isn't obvious right now.

Broadcasting on shortwave in my opinion will never make money, it is strictly for the hobby. The more you broadcast with a good signal, the more you will be noticed by the shortwave community. But don't expect it to pay the bills.

Hi Robbbert,

I never did expect it to pay bills to be honest !

It's more of an interest.

To be honest I don't have to make anything clear as yet , to the wider community as 99% of them seemed to be overseas and they mostly listened on remote receivers in Brisbane and Freemans Reach, not from overseas and not from Australia.

However, there is some interest from overseas producers especially if a better signal can be achieved. This will be the end result.

I'll let everyone know here what is going on as it does.

Thanks

The website seems to be owned by a Chinese concern now. Tim's content has vanished.

Slightly off topic, my two only digital radios burst into life yesterday.
They are testing in Hobart(finally).
Due to open officially mid March.

When domains expire they are often purchased automatically by companies that monetise them. The domains get pointed to sites which sometimes look quite professional but simply disguise ads. When the links are clicked, the sponsor pays the domain owner. It shouldn't be allowed but that's the 'Net.
