Hi all,

For you television collectors, what's your best, or most unusual find? Did you find a television in a rather odd location, or have you found a 'diamond in the rough'?

This is in light of events today - we took some garbage to the local waste transfer station, and while I was scrounging through the scrap metal/misc. junk pile, I stumbled upon a 12" B&W Philips portable television, in great shape!

It's unusual in that I thought it was a hybrid television, but upon opening it up, discovered that it's solid state! Any thoughts?

EDIT:

I have since discovered that the set is a PHILIPS 02TA122 (unless that's the chassis, in which case I have no clue what the model # is). I've cleaned it up and have it working! Aside from the broken antennae, it's in perfect condition!

Check out the videos for it:

I will post another (better quality) video in the morning.

Interestingly, Monochrome had a similar set, though it was hybrid, not fully solid state:

I Bought a TV At an auction years Ago. I had Only Seen It from the Back. No idea What it Was At the time. Won it for 20$. Turned Out It Was Colour with A uhf Tuner Added At some Stage. It Still chugs away In My shed To This day. Its a timber cabinet So I'm guessing early 80s ????
Analog TV has been switched off Here, so A stb Runs Into A Vcr with Uhf output

What brand/model was it? I've also found a 1960's/70's wooden console television abandoned in the bush, though it was rotted out and full of water. Would the CRT be any good in it (assuming the neck wasn't broken)? The set's been out there for many years, though I would imagine that the CRT, if intact and evacuated, would still be usable? Not so much for the coils and circuitry though (and there may be some valves in it!).

My most unusual set so far is a Thorn Model 5081, which is a 19" mini 3-in-1 from 1969. It's extremely compact, the same size and shape as a normal 23" lowboy.

Hi Sue,

That Thorn sounds quite interesteding! Do you have any photos of it anywhere?

My best find is now my 1979 Rank Arena C-2014, which I found at the local dump. It's a wood-grain colour set, with turret and dial tuning. It's my main set, and aside from minor reception issues, is a great little set. It's also one of my favourites.

I have some photos of it uploaded here:

Chris, I've sent the picture of the Thorn to Brad, just waiting for him to put it up here.

Andrew (TV Collector) has it now. You'd have to ask him. I don't have room for any more sets myself, so I pass them on to him if he's interested.

I haven't tested the Thorn yet so I don't know if it works. I doubt it will work without some attention though, as it hasn't seen mains power in quite a long time!

Nathan, you have two 1960s sets - a console and low-boy. Surely you can use one of them when your mate Steve finishes restoring them?

Nathan, most of the sets I've found were at the local tip, and so far nothing from the Fifties has turned up. The large B&W TVs are almost always from the period 1966-70.
