"Homicide" is technically interesting

I remember being annoyed by the poor audio quality of Homicide. It was often muffled. Back in the day a guy who worked in television at the time once explained to me what the problem was, but I now forget what he said.

I could guess.

Everything shot outside the studio was on 16mm film with the live audio recorded on tape, usually from a boom mic.and using a portable Nagra or similar as was used at the time in radio. Then during film editing it was lipsync'ed and transferred to sprocketted magnetic tape. After editing it went to 2" quad videotape. The early Ampex quads used a mono linear audio track with an upper frequency limit of 8kHz. From there it was kinescoped, i.e. recorded back onto film, usually optical sound track. Videotape was expensive, not all regionals could play it, and there was concern about how long it would last. So it was often erased and reused after the episode was kinescoped. The audio went through so many generations it's a wonder it's as good as it is.

I doubt there was enough time or money to run the sound through "sweetening" as is done today.

"12 Angry Men"

This movie is now regarded as a classic, starring Henry Fonda, and including Jack Klugman in his third movie as one of the jurymen.
Nominated for Oscars in three categories, losing out to Bridge Over the River Quai.

Other great Henry Fonda movies are Mr Roberts (1948 -with Jack Lemon) and On Golden Pond (his last, 1981- well outside your time period but has Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda).

Correction: 1948 was the stage play - the movie was 1955.

There is a great true life story connected to On Golden Pond. Jane and Henry Fonda were estranged for many years. They reconciled during the making of the film.

The audio went through so many generations it's a wonder it's as good as it is.

I'd have to watch some episodes again today to recall if it was the outside location scenes or the studio scenes, or both, that were noticeably muffled. I single out Homicide as I don't remember the audio being so bad in other Oz-made shows at the time.

Yes, in watching movies from that era, one notices the cultural shift into the mid-to-later 1960's: For instance the Pink & Aqua RCA-Whirlpool showroom appliances in comedy Who's Minding the Store(1963) give way to more natural 'Harvest Gold' (yellow), 'Avocado', 'Coppertone' (shaded gloss brown), and even a few rare Orange appliances in Elvis's bad-but-interesting late-1960's films!

The Outer Limits.

I watched it religiously Saturday nights in the early 1960's
I have tried to buy it, without luck, and have even suggested it as a purchase for my local library.

Thanks to all that suggested movies and TV shows, The outer limits is one of my favourite.
The Twilight zone is also one I'm always watching.
While I was waiting for another computer I did watch a couple of movies late at night.
One was the Birds which is too dark for me, so I switched that off before the end.
I Did watch it came from outer space 1951 I think??
That was great, classic old 50s sci fi and with some great old cars and some lovely ladies in classic 50s fashion.

Lots of famous actors hamming it up in roles I'm sure they'd rather forget!
