I have another fully working Colour TV set which will not fit into my new home at the retirement village.
It's the set that supplanted the 18" General in our home.
It is a 22" AWA Thorn 53TI I bought on 22nd July 1982.
It has a simulated teak finish on a timber cabinet standing on 4 legs.
I also have the circuit Diagram on which the model is depicted QM 53cm Rotary Models C5319 * 53TI * C6333 * 63TI. with a 100 degree Picture Tube.
It's here in Mentone, Melbourne if anyone would like, after all it's only just over 30 years old and gives a damn good picture.
It's slated for the same fate as the General I'm afraid, that's not to mention the monster 80cm CRT semi flat screen which I can't give away either.. sigh.

If it does come to tipping them,
putting them on your footpath for a while might save you the trip.
It has happened to me before.

They were a fine series of televisions and made in rather large numbers. Schools and TV stations used them as monitors coupled to JVC U-matic video cassette recorders.

A single and reliable motherboard inside the set looked fairly unimpressive with all that space left over but was probably the design feature that kept these sets out of the serviceman's workshop.

I had a Thorn 63T1 right up until I bought my plasma set about three years ago and only recently threw the Thorn on the council cleanup pile. The picture was perfect even when it was chucked. years earlier I had a 53T1 with the 'square' socket, PL259 video socket and 5-pin DIN socket fitted to the back panel for ancient VCRs that were still made at the time.

Only issue I ever had with these tellies was the vinyl woodgrain contact, which had a habit of peeling off and no matter what you glued it back with, it'd give a poor finish or melt the vinyl.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Hi Vinylted.

I'm a collector of old video game consoles and am currently on the hunt for a colour TV to accompany my collection, as new TV's don't work with old consoles.

It's such a shame to see so many old TV's being scrapped. People can't seem to give them away! .

For me however, it's provided the luxury of choice. My jaw hit the floor when I saw a 120cm rear projection TV being offered for free. But more searching yielded more TV's. Currently you can take your pick of size, era etc... It's all out there at the moment. I find it quite sad, but that's for a different thread perhaps!

So... back on topic! I've decided to get my hands on a 70-80's set as they fit the era of the consoles and bring back a little bit of my childhood, and I think make for interesting pieces of furniture.

So, I would be interested in giving your AWA a good home. It would take pride of place in a collection and would probably see another 30 years of life (It would get use about 3 times a year) - more importantly, it's saved from the scrap heap.

I am going for a particular look but and am on the otherside of town. Would it be too much of an inconvenience to ask for a photo? In the event that it's not what I'm looking for, it would save me the trip out, petrol money etc...

Thanks for your time, I'll drop you a private message just in case you don't visit the forums.

Edit: I'm new to these forums... I'm not sure if there is a private message function... Hmm...)

Hi Pongo,

Send me an email, and I'll send you VinylTed's email address for contact. Just click on my name, and you should see my email address.

I don't know if he still has it or not, but Ted also had an awesome General tabletop television here:

Thanks Chris,

I read the thread you link and VinylTed's e-mail is in there, so I've dropped him a line.

Thanks for the heads up.

Ideally I would like a unit with legs so as to save me buying a table for it. However going by that thread the General tabletop is a desirable unit... tempting.

I'd like to thank the members who saved the two sets from a fate worse than..grins..
Especially the bloke who is keeping the General safe for a fellow member up north until he can collect it.
The HMV has also found a good home thanks to this forum.
Well done everyone.... Ted
