G'day I am a new member, not so much as a collector but an old time hoarder. Preparing to move to a retirement village soon..
I have a very early General Colour TV to give away. When colour TV first started in Melbourne the main local brands available were 2 HMV models which happened to be rebadged Japanese Generals.
I worked at the SEC at that time, and the Monash House Social Club took orders and brought in at least 2 container loads of these TV's for members.
I bought one at the time, but obviously replaced it several times over the years.
The point is that I still have it, and it still works!
If anyone would like it... just ask. I'd be in the horrors if it had to go to the tip!

I would love it mate, can you drive all the way to NSW though?

G'day Nathan,

The general (no pun intended) rule of thumb for freebies is that they usually get collected by the recipient. Your best bet with this sort of thing is to arrange for a member of this site who is travelling between Melbourne and Newcastle soon to carry the telly if they have the space for it.

If that can be achieved, remember that it is customary to make an offer to the person who does this - it is usually a carton of beer (Crownies are usually the universal currency) or cash to the value of a carton of beer. Smile

Vinylted, do you have any photos of the set? Could you send some to Brad please, so he can post them?

Chris

The HMV model 12613 is an 18 inch timber cased table model with a delta gun CRT.

This model is a restyled version of the General GC18A. As with most of these early Japanese TV's they seem to work forever.

I'm not sure why Nathan thinks it is a console. Wishful thinking Nathan?

Sorry, I thought that if a TV had a timber cabinet it would be a console model, I love the old console sets, I have a HMV Trent lowboy that is getting restored currently and when it is finished it will be hooked up to my DVD/VHS combo that I borrowed off Mum to watch DVDs on

Nathan, consoles aren't the only televisions that came with timber, timber veneer and vinyl wood-grain cabinets. You're forgetting low-boys, consolettes, tabletops, portables, and combination units. Just because it is timber, veneer or vinyl, doesn't mean that it's specifically a console.

You used to have a perfectly good Astor console Nathan, which only needed an electronic restoration and minor cabinet restoration to get it going. Why did you dump it if you love consoles?

I'd be most keen to see a photo of this set. TV collector, does this set use a delta-gun CRT? I've been after one for a while now, though seem to keep finding in-line gun CRTs.

Yes it has a delta gun CRT.

One shows the HMV Braddon and the other is the original General GC18A model.

Finding delta gun CRT colour TV's is getting a lot harder now as most have been sent to the tip. They were only on sale for a couple of years so there were never many around to start with.

That is most certainly an awesome looking set! If I were closer to you, I'd grab that thing in a second. What's the condition like (working, parts etc.)?

I'll have to see when we're heading down to Victoria next.

I remember working on many of these sets. A local motel had them in every room. They were very reliable. When UHF started in our area I had to take the UHF tuner out of almost every one and free up the UHF tuner mechanism!

G'day Fellas,
The General is in good condition and is working. I have bought a unit in a retirement village, and it definitely can't go with me.
There is a couple of months timeframe at the most before (sob) it goes to the tip.
They are weighty but surely a courier may be able to get it to NSW or elsewhere.
If anyone is interested I could measure & weigh so you can get quotes. Contact me tedcoultas.gmail.com
