Hi, I have just bought this radio and it seems to be in very good condition. I am going to replace most of the capacitors etc. The case is in very good condition except for one missing knob. I have some questions as I am new to this branch of electronics.
1. Is it possible to obtain new (repro) or used knobs?
2. On some online views I have seen of the underneath of the chassis there appears to be some sort of flywheel on the back of the tuning shaft. Mine has not got this and I wondered if some models do not have this fitted.
3. This set I think is one of the later ones. It has the number 40046 rivetted to the rear of the chassis. It also has a 6AN7 valve. Is it possible to get a schemetic and parts list for this model?
Many thanks in advance for any help to a newie.
Terry

G'day Terry and welcome to the forums.
A few people make reproduction knobs for certain models though unless the radio was a particularly rare one (such as a jade Radiolette from the 1930s) I would be more inclined to try and locate genuine knobs. They look better and are made of Bakelite rather than ABS or other thermoplastic material and thus contribute better to the historic value of the receiver. I've been known to purchase smashed radios just for things like valves, knobs and dial glasses. Such beasts usually go quite cheap on Ebay.
Many radios had flywheels on the inside of the tuning control. In some cases this was a genuine flywheel to help smooth out the passage of the tuning mechanism. In other cases it was just a big pulley and usually made of pressed metal. As the years went on, the lighter and less durable things like this were, especially after the introduction of television, where householders had to juggle the purchase and upkeep of two expensive entertainment appliances rather than just the one.
6.3v baseless valves started to appear around 1949 though there was a transition period where many radios made between 1949 and around 1951 had a mix of these and the older octal variety. Manufacturers who stockpiled large numbers of valves tended to do this as they would have needed to exhaust supplies of octal valves eventually.

Guys, just be sure to note my comments on the front page. The new connections for this site have been set up and the servers will be going across town over the next few hours. During that time the forums will not be available.

Thanks Brad and Monochrome625. It is great to be able to pick your brains. Could you please let me know where I could buy double ended capacitors. I have all the specs I need but most of the wholesalers seem to deal mostly in PC board types (single ended). Again many thanks,
Terry

You can get all these caps, and a lot more, from Bobs Tube Audio in Adelaide. Don't have his address now but you can find his shop on ebay, under 'qch'. Always had good service.

Thanks for all the help. I have ordered caps from Evatco. When I get them I will swap them over and try turning set on using the light globe trick. Kicking myself that I sold a Variac at a swap meet a few years ago for 20 bucks.

Welcome Stan
I am a noob here my self & with Valve Tech but I am learning
A dim lamp is better than nothing
Ssehh $20 were was I :LOL
If that has 6X5 rectifier Valve (Seems they do) Id suggest you at lest get it checked on a good Valve tester or get a NOS "tested" tube (preferably X plate configuration...)
alternative ask advice on replacing with Silicon Rectifier Diodes
Ebay or Email Evatco About Nos tubes
Thought thats just my Noob advice after finding 2 in 2 bees that I just wont risk ever using
(so I got replacements and they tested good...I hope )
My theory is that leaky caps and 70mA tubes are not a match made in heaven
So the rectifier takes a beating over the many years and the caps just add insult to injury
(along with H`K leakage over time)
But not the expert on this by far
Anyway
Edit
On Knobs it might be a bit of a hunt
I dont know of anyone doing repo's of them (possibly there is thought, there are repo dials for some models and one guy whom makes Kriesler badges I believe)
I did find some info on making you own from molds but seems a lot of work, if you want the links let me know
Stick an add in the" wanted" Section too
By the sounds of it Stan you seem to be in the game of electronics & radio to some extent thought if you go to swap meets
Cheers ![Smile](smiley/smile.gif)

If you need one, Steve Savell has just produced a dial for this set.

Thanks for the info Baz. Luckily mine is perfect (unless I break It!). Just waiting for circuit diagram now and everything should be go.

Monochrome, can you please try sending your messages again. I think I have fixed the problem. Don't worry if you have already sent things in parts. I will sort out what has to go where tonight. ![Smile](smiley/smile.gif)

Hi Brad, When I click on your post it takes me to Mono's post but when I click on the links I get the old 404 - File or directory not found. Perhaps I am to early as you might have not linked them yet. I will try again later. Thanks for the assistance from you and Mono.
