Hi All

I know that there has been a thread on this already but I nearly choked on my afternoon drink when I spotted this on one of the local Adelaide

http://www.scammellauctions.com.au/catalogue/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=317233&

Wow do people actually pay these prices for radios?

Dan

Price is often affected by the colour, and blue tends to be a highly sought after colour in many models.

'Tis said that 90% of bakelite radios were brown, and 90% of that remaining 10% were white/cream. So, coloured bakelite is rare in general. This one being pale blue may be quite rare.

This assumes that it isn't painted. I'm no expert on Astor "footballs", so I don't know if it's a genuine factory colour.

Coloured Bakelite radios always demand a premium price anything from $500 to $20,000 I don't understand why you nearly choked on your drink have you tried buying any Blue or Green Bakelite radios?

A blue Footy will go for around $4,000 on Ebay or at a live auction if it is in good nick.

That Auction price guide is very VERY rough, Having watched that Auction for a while, They usually fetch much closer to Ebay prices with the occasional bargain! Some wind up on Ebay severely over priced and stay the for ages!

Selling price will usually depend on rarity and desirability, more so than seller's wishful thinking.

If at least two people really want this one for their collections, then it may fetch big dollars -- again, assuming that's it's the real thing (and is in good condition).

I was under the assumption is is painted like the one I have sitting way down in my collection of un restored radios waiting to be looked at.

There was a duck egg blue Footy. It's safe to assume this is blue Bakelite. Astor Footballs came in almost as many colours as their bigger Mickey brothers. I've seen brown, white, light blue, green, pumpkin, yellow and fire engine red. I have the first two colours and can only hope that one day I will have the rest.

The six official colours for the Astor GR & GRP Baby (Football) are as follows:

Walnut, Cream, Champagne, Green, Amber & Red. I'm guessing the blue one as shown on the auction site would be the Champagne.

I'd say pumpkin and yellow are variations of the amber then.

What's the story with this blue one? Painted?

I doubt it to be honest. I've seen a couple over the years that are that colour in bakelite. I am sure there's a blue one in Radio Days too.

I've twice been told that Radio Days contains some "Dulux radios". I don't know if that's true or not.

I'd have to check. I don't think I have my copy handy at the moment. It's possible if there's some coloured Philips or Kriesler sets in it.

Pretty soon, with 3D printers, one could have rare radios in rare colours. Smile
