There is also a pink one and I have seen it in the flesh and its not painted, I'm lucky to have a few colours but will probably never afford to finish my set

And to think that from a performance & servicing point of view they're horrible. Have great fun trying to stabilise them. Putting the unshielded antenna coils where they did & having grid resistors in range of it not brilliant.

I actually had to put shrink tube over one lot. Then put a plate over them to tame it.

Actually I was thinking about 3D printing for radio knobs and how well that would fair?

You raise an interesting point thought on actually making cases....

1 Possibly make it harder to pick real ones for the layperson
(meaning open to exploitation by the unscrupulous)

2 Possibly safety aspects (plastic used)

just some points that come to mind, I dont know enough about 3D printing to comment thought

I am not oppressed to the Idea, even thought it would never sit quite right with me.
It would be ashamed to have a nicely restored chassis sitting there naked.

Just on pricing well I seen a blue (darker blue it seems) go for like $5000 on ebay
a pink (possible shell pink ) UN-restored wreck go for $600 a while back.

Marc
Thats a good point too but I think these days it will all be about the looks rather then functionality
I think that will apply only to the truer restorers out there, the technical side.

Nothing wrong with being a straight (non tech) collector but really I think they miss the best part of an old radio and thats in getting the thing working and looking niceSmile
nothing like that feeling when it comes back to life

The other side of the coin I guess is will AM ever be phased out ?...I did read of FM in Norway I think it was soon being canned but I dont know the truth of the matter...still analogue TV here is history now with Digital only and I guess like the 405 line system it really only becomes a nice restored piece of furniture..unless you have converter of some kind to actually use it for its purpose.

Ebay I noticed is all over the shop price wise and sadly too many trying to get restored prices for base material radios...thought sure there is only so many old radios out there to be had.

Anyway yeah scary some of the prices that can be paid for some of these old coloured Bakelite sets.

There was green empire listed for 15K and it had cracks...no takers that I know of but yeah that was the stating price.

Cheers All Smile

The other side of the coin I guess is will AM ever be phased out?

Back in the Howard years when the big decision was made on digital television it was also decided that radio would not be migrated on the same scale for at least twenty years. We are coming up to about the halfway mark on that issue and it looks like analogue radio on both the AM and FM bands will be around for a long time yet.

The big issue with digital radio is that it can be received in a mobile situation - a scenario possible but unlikely with television. Some cars are now fitted with digital radios but the reception is not always satisfactory as the transmission signals are simply not strong enough. For distance per watt, AM kills everything. A 2kW regional radio station such as 2TM can be heard just about anywhere in the country with a five valve radio in good order with a decent antenna. FM stations are too numerous and the available channels too few so they drown each other out beyond their authorised markets and even without that problem they still can't go the distance that AM stations can, regardless of their power output. For distance, DAB+ is well and truly out of the race.

Not a word has been said since, from the Rudd, Gillard or Abbott governments. That said, at the moment the current government has more pressing issues, given that AM and FM stations are already simulcast on DAB+ in the state capitals.

One thing to note about DAB+: It does sound much better than either AM or FM.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...
