We've discussed the wide range of manufacturing dates for Kriesler 11-99s before, but here's a very rare 11-99 from the 1940s and with a bakelite case, too!

To be honest I am not convinced that radio has a Bakelite cabinet. There is slight distortion on the top from the heat of the valves and the power lead appears to be the original 1960s three core type with the hemp packing between the conductors and ribbed finish on the outer sheath.

Though hard to read I see the serial number is in the 15000's, which would put it around the 1968 mark.

Perhaps someone should break the news to the seller!

They'd better be quick. With a buy it now of only $280 it's sure to be snapped up real quick.

A true bargain for such a futuristic 1940's radio, 20 years ahead of its time. A production run of 30 odd years is amazing and using valves that hadn't yet been developed ensures its rarity.

What amazes me is that every time the age of a vintage anything is guessed it usually manages to be older rather than younger.

I copped it at an antique shop once, a 1950s timber radio of a brand that I do not remember was for sale for around the $200 mark. It was a fairly basic mantel radio about the size of a Radiolette 500M and was fitted with baseless valves.

The landlord insisted that the radio was made in the 1920s and when I disputed this to try and get the price down to the more reasonable $60 that the radio was actually worth I copped the "you are only a kid, I was alive when this radio was made, I should know". It was 1991, I was 20 and the shopkeep was about 120 but it was no excuse for lying about the age of the radio.

Several months later the radio was still on the shelf in that shop though the shop isn't there today despite numerous other antique shops in the area surviving to this day. If the bloke stated the correct age of the radio and still wanted $200 for it he'd still be delusional but at least he'd have some credibility and that is all a man can take to his grave at the end of the day.

It's got 4 watchers -- probably all from here.

Seller is probably rubbing their hands and mentally spending all that loot already.

To be honest I am not convinced that radio has a Bakelite cabinet.
I eliminated 2 of these from the collection a couple of years ago, after I tried removing some sticker residue with turps. At least I learnt that plastic and turps don't go together, but it confirmed that the radios were plastic.

I've learned that the hard way too. I always soak bestickered cabinets in hot water these days - just leave it in the water until the stickers succumb.

Of course it's a plastic case! The seller is seriously misinformed or delusional.

That bloke was a bit more realistic about the age of the set but I doubt he'll get a bid. That model is not worth $180.00 regardless of condition. One exception may be if the radio was in its box, unused and had its destruction manual with it.

Now, that would be something to see. I wonder if anybody has such a thing ... for any valve model?

I don't for a valve job but I have an AWA transistorised model that is brand new in the box with destructions and crystal earphone. Never been powered up as I don't want to modify the battery clips to take a 9 volt battery. The leatherette carry case is in prime nick too. Sometimes I look at it and marvel at the fact that the white plastic hasn't turned yellow and there is no battery acid inside the receiver.
