Hi All, I've been hunting one of these sets for years, now that I have one - it lacks all the usual info....

It appears to be a 7 or a 12 Valve set.

My Grandfather gave me the same set back in 1980, which I had restored, it was 'lost' once I moved to OZ.

If anyone has schematics, or anything on it - I'd be most grateful!

Let us know the valve line-up, if possible.

This is more like a large tombstone table radio than a console. I count seven valves, including the rectifier and magic eye. Not sure of the brand however.

Is this a Aussie or Kiwi radio?

I'm sure its a Kiwi set, But, I've been wrong before...

There is another small valve hiding near the front, so that makes it 8 including the Magic-Eye

Red: EBC33, Mullard
Black, on the left, 6K7, RCA
On the right,
8C, Philips
6F6, Brimar

The others either have no numbers, or I didn't pull out due to the location - dont want to risk breaking anything....

Hope that helps

I also count 7, including the magic eye. Letting us know the valve types would be a big help towards possible identification but be careful removing them -- do so by the base not by the glass envelope and be careful removing the top caps.

There may also be clues on that plate riveted to the rear of the chassis. Sometimes patent numbers can be useful.

The markings on valves are usually very easy to wipe off the glass, so don't try to clean them.

According to Radiomuseum, ' "Ultimate" branded radios were exported to Australia from 1935 to 1940 ' so it could well have been sold here.

I can't find anything using the stated valves.

Given that this was a huge brand in NZ, perhaps you can get more info from:

http://www.nzvrs.pl.net/.

Have a look at Ultimate model AW7.
Valve line-up 3 X 6K7, 6C5, 6Q7 (EBC33), 6F6, 80 & 6U5.
Circuit is in AORSM Vol. 1.

(EDIT - I meant AORSM Volume 2.)

I have seen the almost "chicken head" knobs on something Australian that I may have a photo of.

I think we need the actual numbers off of the valves. The numbers on the older tubes are less likely to come off.

The tuning indicator will be 6U5 or 6E5 and having an EBC33 will have one of two forms of AGC to provide for it, possibly delayed. 6K7 was released 8/35

We need to know if that is a three, or four gang tuner? If it is the first metal 6K7 would be an RF amp accounting for one can.

The second 6K7 an "Autodyne" (Screen grid) mixer with the 6C5 if it is (?) as the separate exciter. Midwest often used a Colpitts oscillator and that needs two gangs & enabled them to get to 60MHz

One of the big "S" type valves is the Output valve the other is liable to be an 80 Rectifier.

The tin cans do not contain valves 6K7 &EBC33 are self shielding.

I would expect 2 cans with Rf coils one oscillator 2 IF and the other in the RT corner is wet filter cap... do not power.

Stromberg Carlson have used those knobs on some on their radiograms. There is also an NZ Columbus table radio on Ebay that also has similar knobs.

This is good!
Just waiting on a reply from AORSM - as to wether or not my radio is the one thats on thier CD, as mentioned by Monochrome625.

I'm sure that some of the models will be very similar, change of a part here or there.
I did find this: Search on Ebay for ULTIMATE 1935 Vintage Valve radio
The one that is shown has what appears to be the same knobs
As for the tuner, I'll have another look later this morning.

A circuit for the Ultimate 6/7 from the AORSM Volume 2, Page 317 has been sent to the administrator to be uploaded to this thread.

In regards to the EBC33, it is likely it has been used as a replacement for a 6Q7. These two valves are similar and have the same base and pin-out.
