It is customary for me to give some thanks to members for the contributions they have made in the last year and this year is no exception. It goes without saying that no website can work without the input of its community. In many ways 2017 has been a bit of a bumpy ride and members have tolerated the instability of the site for much of the year.

So in addition to my thanks for an otherwise good year on the forums, my heartfelt thanks goes out to everyone for the patience they have shown whilst I try to nut things out with the site. You all deserve better and I am hoping to provide a better website in 2018.

Merry Christmas to you all and a happy and safe New Year.

Brad,

All looking good so far & I am sure I echo the words of all Forum Members in saying a big Thank You for the sterling effort you have put in to get the site up & going again.
If the speed at which this all loaded for me is any indication I think you may well have nailed whatever "buggy" was in there.

Merry Xmas to all & have a great New Year everyone.

Lindsay

The speed of the new site is down to the technology used - ASPX webpages are compiled into an application before they are interpreted by the web server and then sent to the visitor. I've only experimented with this in the past and am still amazed at the difference in speed and there is also much less code so the bulk of the 'weight' of a page is in the content and not what manages it. The ASP pages on the old site are merely server-side scripts. A good thing in their day but definitely not the way ahead.

I'm hopeful that it is a sign of good things to come next year. Smile

Brad,

The new home page is being displayed in quite large font in Firefox here. Is that intentional?

I think the font is 17pt. It's intended to be larger than the old site but there shouldn't be that much of a difference. When I get home from work I'll check the other browsers. At this stage I've only tested it in Edge.

Yes, it looks to be 17pt Arial, whereas the forums show in circa 11 or 12 pt Arial.

Hate to say it, but I had a 500 error yesterday afternoon... Hopefully it was just Brad doing something.

Nope. I had one today, at about 09:30 I think. I was on the forums when it happened but it cleared away when I refreshed.

Okay, I've checked the font issue and for some odd reason, Firefox is the only browser that does not render the font Calibri Light. Instead it shows whatever the user's default Sans Serif font is, which is usually Arial. The same thing happens in IE on mobile phones and this issue also causes the main links to appear on two lines instead of one.

After Christmas I will look at a workaround.

Hi Brad,

Used this Site for the first time this morning. Excellent. Loading up etc is much faster for me. I am using Firefox.

Only issue I found .... after having read a Thread and returned to that same Forum .... the Thread heading remained 'bold' .....whereas, in the old system, the heading changed to 'unbolded' .... indicating that I had read it. Not a problem when there are only one or two Threads or if some-one reads every Thread sequentially, but if you 'cherry pick' the Threads to read, and there are half dozen or more ..... the old system was useful.

I have never got into web development, hosting etc ... but have seen from a distance the time and effort put in by others ..... so thank you for your time and effort and competence.

Anyone else put a present under the Xmas tree .... "To me From Santa" .... yep guilty, Quad FM1 valve tuner .... not quadraphonic, or quadratic, nor quadrature .... British manufacturer Quad ..... Smile

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all ....

Cheers, Ian
