Members who have a Gravatar account (and at least one of you do, as I found in testing this afternoon) or for those that have been thinking about obtaining a Gravatar account for the purpose of hosting an avatar that can be used on any forum in the world that supported them, I have some good news.

At some stage this coming week the Vintage Radio forums will support Gravatar for the first time. The necessary support has been added to the site and it is undergoing testing as I write this message. It will roll out one night this week once I am sure there are no bugs or conflicts with other parts of the site.

What is Gravatar?

Many members will know that most discussion forums, including the Vintage Radio Forums support avatars - the 80 x 80 pixel images that appear close to the usernames of members that have either uploaded one or provided a URL linking to one during the registration process. This support will continue for those who want it.

However if you have an account on Gravatar - http://gravatar.com/ - you can show your avatar on any discussion forums that support them simply by using the same e-mail address on your Gravatar account as you do on all the forums you are a member of. Of course to open a Gravatar account you still need to make an avatar, which is just a photo of something you like (or even your own photo) in .jpg, .gif or .png formats and needs to be 80 x 80 pixels.

How does the link to Gravatar work?

The forum software creates an encrypted version of your e-mail address and includes it in a hyperlink to Gravatar's servers. Gravatar replied with the correct avatar. Simple.

As mentioned before, if you'd rather Vintage Radio host your avatar for you, as some members do, this will still be allowed. Gravatar merely adds the ability for your avatar to be used on other forums you are a member of too.

When Gravatar support goes live this week you will see your avatar appear if you already have a Gravatar account. If you are already hosting an avatar here on Vintage Radio then this will override your Gravatar account if you also have one. If you have no avatar at all you will just see a default image, a blue Gravatar logo, in place of an avatar however downt he track this will be changed to something unique to this website.

If you have any questions in relation to this new feature please post them in this thread and I will answer as time permits. Smile

Hey Brad

How do I upload my own picture for use as my avatar? There isn't any option on the "My Profile" page to allow me to upload an image (which would be handy if I felt like changing the image at some time in the future).

Hi Brad ..

I agree with Ian.
Can you add or change an avatar?
Can we add a little info about ourselves for the profile?

This site is a good idea ..
Like it ..

G'day chaps,

Any 80 x 80 pixel image is okay. Please e-mail your preferred images to the address on my profile page (click on my name) and I will add them the same day.
