On Sunday, 9th July there will be a rework of the front page of this website as part of preparations for a shift of the site to a new hosting server.

The role the front page plays will change greatly as the current configuration places a large load on the database, with dozens of queries placed at once for no real benefit to users. In future the front page will display fewer links into the forums and it is my intention to abolish the front page forums as this is a separate system to the main forums we all use and enjoy. Future site update announcements will instead be placed in the General Discussion forum.

I have received a lot of feedback of late regarding site performance. Some of the e-mails have been quite informative and even if I haven't shown it, I am appreciative of the feedback as it has helped to keep things going whilst time is found to prepare the new server. I do have to mention though that a few e-mails have been sent to carp about the ongoing issues however and this has not been helpful at all.

I don't think anyone is too pleased when a website they frequent doesn't perform well however things need to be put in perspective. None of us are going to die as a result of this website not being here and I have never once provided a guarantee that it would. In fact, when the site was first launched in 2003 I deliberately mentioned that the site should be enjoyed whilst it can because it is here today and could be gone tomorrow, and whilst the aim is to keep the site going for as many years as possible the guarantee provided will never change. It's a free service which ultimately only one person (me) pays for.

I am expecting to transition to the new server some time next week. Following this there will be an evaluation of how the site is going on it's new home and following this, any other corrective action, if needed. I am hoping for a big improvement in reliability though I am conscious of the fact that I still do not know the precise cause of the 500 Errors that have been plaguing the site this year.

Looking forward to the upgrade and thanks for all the effort involved in the site's upkeep.

I'm going to think positive about it. I reckon it'll help. Smile

That's certainly better than the opposite.

Brad, I know exactly how much effort you put into this. My daughter in law hosts a business web site and do I know about server problems, the equipment failures even though there are more back ups than NASA, the midnight trips to the 5 star security server building swapping out dead and dying servers and gear, the moaning customers, the continual reporting of web problems, and so on and so on.

If you need to change to a subscription model to keep the site going just give me your account details and i'll subscribe.

Everybody expects something for nothing and if anybody has ever moaned about this site and the tribulations 1/ they don't know much about computers and networks and 2/ they should be ashamed.

Cheers, Fred.

Just to confirm, Robert, it's not you. Generally speaking, I do appreciate the feedback received. I just want people to remember that hosting a site isn't always beer and skittles. Smile The comments I am referring to came to me about a month ago.

Dear Brad.
I for one appriciate the work that you do.

I am very happy to be able to log-on to an Australian site. It is nice to read about sets that I might encounter, rather than about sets that I will never come across.

If you go to an annual membership fee, I will be the first to make the direct deposit into the Forum's account.

Wayne.
