Update: The work outlined below is complete and comments can once again be submitted to the forums.

To allow a couple of new features to be introduced there will be an interruption to members' ability to post comments on the forums this weekend. The task will involve adding tables to the database that will support the new features and should only take about an hour.

The work is planned to be done between 17:00 and 18:00 on Sunday, 21st September. The rest of the site, including reading the forums, will still be accessible during this time.

I will provide details on what the new features will be at a later time, once testing has been carried out. These features will be available on both the main and narrow sites.

You will all notice some changes as of today.

The site's Terms and Conditions page has been brought back after a long absence. Whilst it looks like a mash of legal claptrap it is a necessary evil in today's world. Don't take it too much to heart - it is a standard document I've been using on most of the websites I've owned over the last fifteen years and it all simply means that this site is here and you may use it in any legal and reasonable way you wish and that:-

1. As the site is free to join and use there are no warranties of any kind, no matter what.
2. If the site disappears from the Internet (unlikely) then I am not responsible for the loss of all the data stored on the server (also a very unlikely event, given the excellent backup regime employed here).

Two small feature improvements have been added today:-

1. The 'wide site/narrow site' link in the sidebar now takes you to the corresponding page on the linked site rather than back to the home page.
2. In the footer there is a list of who is either on the site at present or have been here in the last 24 hours. This is a feature that some other forums have so it is now included here. It does have some obvious bugs but these aren't critical and will be ironed out in the next few days.

Features coming in the next week or two:-

1. The paging system will receive an upgrade (only on the wide site) so the paging numbers at the top and bottom of each forum page will be highlighted in pages where you have your own comments posted. I haven't started the coding work for this yet but I am hoping it will be easy to implement.
2. Your profile page will soon display your biography, if you have entered one on the system. In the next few days the ability to add, change or delete a biography will be added to your control panels. You will then be given an opportunity to alter or delete anything that you do not want on public display, though I would imagine that members would have considered this at the time they added their biography.
3. For those lucky enough to have an amateur radio callsign, if you wish, this will soon be displayed both on your profile page and near your username adjacent to your comments on the forums. Posting callsigns will be available to all members who are licenced radio amateurs, remembering that it is illegal to quote a callsign you have not been issued with. I will not be routinely vetting callsign usage - it will be up to members to be honest with themselves and others.

Still to come:-

1. Posting photos (hosted on site).
2. Forum subscription.
3. Non-compliant comment reporting system.

Brad, if you need additional legal claptrap, feel free to copy some of mine: Smile

I cannot recommend for or against any of the above commercial sites; you must make your own judgement of their quality and reputation. Void where prohibited. Use only as directed. No purchase necessary. No user serviceable parts inside. Smoking is hazardous to your health. Your milage may vary. May contain peanuts. Trademarks are owned by companies that own them (duh). Don't blame me. This is a test of the emergency broadchasing system... this is only a test. Better dead than red. Decision of the judges is final. Subject to change without notice. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Package sold by weight, not volume. Simulated picture. Refer servicing to qualified personnel. Licensed only to extent indicated on carton. Action figures sold separately. Allow four to six weeks for delivery. Close cover before striking. Colors may fade. Do not bend, fold, mutilate, or spindle. As seen on TV. At participating locations only. Batteries not included. Breaking seal constitutes acceptance of agreement. Contents may settle during shipment. Contestants have been briefed on some questions before the show. Do not use while operating a motor vehicle or heavy equipment. Do not write below this line. Employees and their families are not eligible. For external use only. For off-road use only. For office use only. For recreational use only. No other warranty expressed or implied. No passes accepted for this engagement. No postage necessary if mailed in the United States. Not responsible for direct, indirect, incidental or consequential damages resulting from any defect, error or failure to perform.

Trademarks are owned by companies that own them

Yeah, I've always wondered about how obviously pointless some of these clauses can be.

It reminds me of back when I was awarded my trade certificate at the end of my electrical apprenticeship. I wanted to prevent it from being dog-eared and fading so I had it laminated. There were no $20 laminators back then so I had to take it to a film processing centre and have it done professionally.

The sheila behind the counter mumbled the words, "all care taken but no responsibility accepted for damage". My reply to her boss, standing beside her, was something like, "excuse me but I am about to pay you lot some serious coin for this. If the certificate is damaged I am going to cause some damage of my own!"

Of course the job was done to perfection, as it should be. It was a standard commercial transaction. Payment for a product of merchantable quality. After all, there is no way I could get a duplicate certificate - they aren't awarded so care of the original is paramount.

To all members,

As part of a series of rolling upgrades to all pages on the site, I have introduced a new 'start thread' form for the main forums. It has been upgraded in a visual sense and a lot of redundant code has been removed and things tidied up. At the moment this is only on the wide site but if there are no reports of bugs it will roll out to the narrow site in the next few days.

This form plus its back-end processing script also allows me to remove more than 20 other files from the site, making things more organised and easier to deal with when rolling out further upgrades.

I should point out that this new setup has undergone about four hours of testing to make sure it works under all circumstances, including error management. However should anyone find it not working correctly, please e-mail me and I will sort it out. Address is on my profile page.

Mate this is a awesome site. It provides me with a lot of overnight entertainment with my night shift and I find the help and advice from the guys invaluable. Cheers Carl.
