Here are some of the recollections of television from my youth.

When I was very young I guess one of my earliest memories was the fact that one had to switch the TV on, then wait for the sound to come on, followed shortly after by the picture. I distinctly remember on a couple of occasions during hot Summer nights when the mains voltage would drop and the picture would become smaller. If unlucky, the mains would drop to a point where the picture would break up.
With our set, when it was switched off, a bright spot would appear in the centre of the screen and slowly decay.

Our first TV. It was a console, I don't know the brand, and my parents could not remember it either. I distinctly remember what the control panel looked like but have never seen another example. I am guessing that it was most likely an Astor, or following that, an AWA.

Our second TV was a 23 inch Astor with the series 8 chassis. This chassis contained three of the ten pin Decal base valves. I think that we got that set around 1967?

Our next set came in 1975, with the introduction of colour TV to Australia.
A 26” double-ended Rank-Arena with a delta C.R.T. I think that set only ever had one service call. That was while it was under warranty. Adjustment to the pal decoder board.

The next TV to come along was an N.E.C. with an early infra red remote control. I think that was about 1981.

Now to the present. What made me think of these old TV's?
Well, I leave for work before sunrise each morning, and when I switch off the house lights to travel to work, I am greeted with a ghost from the past. The glow from the picture tubes of Two 26” delta tube colour TV's.
The light from the lounge room light excites the phosphor of the tubes giving glow that helps me exit the room. A sight many grew up with but few now experience.

Wayne.

I think you maybe meant to post this in Vintage Television Smile

The first TV in our house was a rental; a Pye on skinny metal legs from memory. My parents wanted to decide if television was worth the investment.

After a week or so they decided it was and bought a Kriesler (model similar to Console Grand 121-47) which lasted until I left home at 18 and I took it with me to my rental digs, a colour TV having replaced it at home. It lasted about a year with me before giving up the ghost.

Even I didn't pick up on this last night, though I was very tired from having a cold and all the travelling for the RadioFest.

Labrat, leave things as is, I will fix it tonight when I am back in civilisation. Wink

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...
