I have just picked up this HMV unit and can not find anything indicating which model it is. Can someone point me in the right direction. I'm hoping there is a Web site that I could go to that would list most or all Australian models with pictures. I have provided links to photos for people to look at. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Let us know the valve line-up in it. That can often help whittle down the choices.

The backing on the cabinet is stapled on. Could this mean that the unit has been refurbed at some stage or would this be normal for a 60's-ish stereogram? After peering through one of the holes in the backing I found a piece of paper stapled to the inside of the cabinet.

V1-6AN7
V2-6N8
V3-6GW8
V4-6GW8

There is also a number in the bottom right hand corner of the piece of paper. "683-2611" . I Googled it and came up with nothing.

Not sure of the model, but the chassis is a N3. The model number will be N3-?? These chassis were found in various HMV grams. I do have a circuit diagram for the N3. If you click on to my profile you'll find my email and I'll send you a copy. I will be able to tell you the exact model number, but not straight away.

Cheers.

I have a schematic and service notes for what is termed HMV Model N3 and which matches the valve line-up. The notes contain a diagram that mirrors the one on the inside of your case, other than the drawing reference number (bottom right) is 683-1721 and I think yours is different -- however that may not be significant.

N3 service manual sent. Is yours a HMV "Lyric"? The "Lyric is a Model N3-4Z". The N3-4Y is a HMV "Caprice".

Cheers.

Thanks GTC, but I now have a copy of the manual.
Monochrome625, I don't think it is a Lyric or Caprice. In the top left corner on the front is a badge that says "High fidelity" just below the HMV badge. It also has a strip badge across the front towards the bottom that says "Stereo by HMV". There are no other badges.

Yes, I know it is not the Caprice. I have the page for that one. Don't worry I'll find out what it is and will let you know.

Cheers.

Here is a Ebay listing for a HMV Caprice (N3-4Y)

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HMV-RADIOGRAM-VALVE-record-player-radio-retro-1965-NOT-WORKING-/....

It has the same chassis and is the little brother of MikeGS's, as shown above.

Cheers.

No, the speakers are not Magnavox. They are Plessey. Here are pictures of them.

These are not the orignal speakers for this unit. HMV usually used Magnavox speakers.

The speakers are a Rola Plessey, type C8M (15 ohms). They a basically a Rola speaker, made in the Rola factory after Plessey took over.

Extract from Loudspeaker Data, Alnico & Ferrite models, Plessey Components Australia, Rola Division, The Boulevard, Richmond, Victoria:-

Data for C8M as follows:

Power handling peak rating - 10 watts.
Fundamental resonance - 75 Hz.
Frequency response - 70 Hz/8 kHz.
Voice coil impedance - 2 or 15 ohms at 400 hz.
Air gap flux density - 9700 (gauss).
Gap flux - 37000 (lines).

Dimensions:

Diaphragm housing diam - 8 1/16" (205 mm).
Baffle opening diam - 7 1/16" (180 mm).
Depth, pad ring to rear - 2 27/32" (72 mm).
Voice coil diam - 1" (26 mm).

Mounting:

Four 5/16" (8 mm) X 7/32" (6 mm) slots spaced 90 degrees on 7 19/32" (15 mm) pitch diam.

Ahh OK. As I suspected. The unit has been refurbished at some stage.
