With the contrast control at maximum, and a high-quality video signal, my set gives the best picture (good range of greys and proper blacks and whites) when the brightness control is in the half-way position. Does this indicate the brightness control is working correctly? I've never been certain what the ideal control effect is supposed to be.

It sounds ideal.

I would expect a control to normally operate around the centre of its adjustment range which would then give an element of reserve adjustment for unusual situations.
