I just recently picked up a PYE-Tecnico W101A model purchased in 1957 by a television technician. Only ever owned by him and the guy I received it from. I found this interesting advertisement from 1957, showing the W101. The W101A looks similar but with more modern controls. Love the reference to "High Definition".

Having read up on their history Tecnico produced radios, vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers. Then PYE bought Tecnico out in 1955 with a view to manufacturing televisions also. You can see a couple of Tecnico advertisements here.

The company became PYE Industries in 1959.

I was hoping someone may know a restorer of valve televisions that I could contact with regard to getting her running again. I live in Brisbane.

I would imagine there would be very few of these around, if any. Hope you enjoy the information and pics posted.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Rushworthy.
If it is of any help, I can supply you with a circuit diagram for a Pye W101 & W101C. I think this would be electrically the same as a W101A.
Cheers.

Nice TV, hope you have some luck in getting it going. These early sets can be quite difficult to get running.

Identifying the correct circuit for this TV is not so straightforward. Although the chassis plate identifies it as being a W101A the printed lettering to the left identifies the chassis as a TB200E-A.

The two circuits are quite different. The W101 series sets use 6BX6 IF valves while the TB200 chassis uses 6BL8 valves for most of the functions in the TV.

A quick check of the IF valves will confirm which circuit you need.

Hi Rushworthy,
I saw your post and it reminded me that I had a Pye W101A in storage here for some time. My father purchased it from my grandfather in 1959, who in turn purchased it to watch the 56 Olympics, or so I was told. I thought it was in reasonable condition until I found that rats had made a nest inside it.

I think I should make an effort and try to make it operational again.

Did you find some circuits and get yours going?

Hi Sparky,

It would be awesome to see running again. I can't imagine there being too many of these sets hanging around... I love the looks of this PYE-Technico W101A!

What exactly was the "Technico" name for? Was it a factory/company that produced sets in Sydney under the PYE name? I have a 1980s portable AC/DC radio under the "Technico" name, though it was made in Hong Kong.

Yes it would be good to get it going. I think I can do this. I am a amateur radio operator and I spend a lot of time with electronics for my work. I think most of the work will be cleaning out the rat pee and shredded paper, then perhaps changing some of the older caps. I don't have a circuit for the W101, which makes it a bit harder. (if someone has one, please let me know) The woodwork is in good order and unlike the one by Rushworthy, this unit still has its original legs screwed on.

I haven't done a census of the tubes inside yet. I'm hoping I have spares here. (Many years ago when Tandy Electronics got out of vacuum tubes , They accepted my offer of $150 to purchase their entire stock of tubes from one store in Melbourne, so I still have a bunch of TV tubes in original 'Realistic' packaging)

I grew up watching this particular TV. Recently I re-watched the original 'Kung Fu' TV series on You-tube and it surprised me that the series was in colour, then I remembered I had last watched it in the 70's on this Pye.

I don't know anything about the Technico company.

This 1955 article in The Argus announces the takeover offer of Tecnico by Pye UK. Seems that Tecnico was on the financial skids at the time:
