One way of thinking about it is this:

If you've worked with old radios you may have seen tone control circuits that work in the negative feedback path, that reduce the feedback at lower frequencies so as to boost the bass response from a small speaker. Their effect is to distort the waveform so as to compensate for the deficiencies of the speaker.

Same here. You need to change the shape of the final waveform to compensate for the inductance of the deflection yoke.
