Yes Stroppy I don't pretend to have invented such devices, a US vintage TV forum has shown up something similar. Mine's probably the only one with a built-in modulator optimised for vintage TVs....

I'm glad they nabbed your miscreants!

I received my RF modulator yesterday.

Thanks Ian!!

It is hooked up to a 1980's B/W 10" Sharp 3-in-1 TV/radio/cassette, model 10P-35. I had to turn the gain right up to get rid of the caption noise. Can't wait to hook it up to my 1956 AWA 202C!

Presently watching a old Homicide episode on DVD. The closing scene is the police Studebaker driving down Twickenham Cres, Burnley, curving into Barkly Ave & then turning on to the then newly built South Eastern Freeway.

I've found with the DVD player I'm using I'll run at max audio gain. Just back it off a little if the audio clips when playing from your content/source.

Your Sharp might need a tweak of the ratio detector balance (or quadrature coil if it's a later model) to get rid of the caption buzz entirely.

Check it on a few other sets, if it's the same, you should tweak the subcarrier coil (L2) in the modulator instead.

Let me know if that happens, my reference TV might be out.....

I've assembled another 6 but I'm short a couple of parts.

BTW, Silicon Chip magazine will be running it as a project, probably in the April issue.

It's in the March issue, out now.

That's funny, they were supposed to send me a proof before publishing!

Maybe I should look in the letterbox.....

There's a copy of March SC!

They've done a good job on the article. I needn't have worried!

Given some of the clangers that end up on the errata page, they really should pay more attention to that aspect.

Yes I picked up a couple of minor issues, nothing serious though. What they are calling a moire pattern on the screen shot of the PM5544 test card is the actual chroma signal being reproduced by the TV, not a camera artifact!
