Yes, it should have been called HG Wells.

I did some research about KGH and Zenith. They were separate. I had forgotten about the fact that, although their late TV circuits were very similar, using Philips tuners, valves and deflection components, the physical design was very different.
The KGH 1.01 to 1.07 chassis was a flip-down style, whereas the Zenith 1202 for example was a narrow conventional pan on the bottom of the cabinet.
Both KGH and Zenith used the same style ink-stamp type serial numbering.
Zenith was at 7 - 11 Rhodes St. West Ryde.
Re HG Palmer, it seems the management practices were very lax. They ran a large service department. A guy I used to work with in the late 60's used to work for them. He owned (or, I should say had in is possession) a red VW Kombi that he told me he was asked to take away by the then service manager - "it's not on the books" he was told....
In the right place at the right time I suppose......

I just read about the Neville Harris case. It seems that the case was even more sensational because Neville's family were well connected and prominent members of the Sydney Jewish community.
The Sydney Truth was always good for a saucy read. Its owner John Norton was a real character. There is a chapter about him in the book "The Wild Men of Sydney". By 1926 the Truth was owned by his son Ezra who was also a bit of a character.

Neville was born above the Harris shoe store, 97 Oxford St, 30/9/1906. Parents Mark & Sara Harris.
Keith Graham Harris (KGH) was Neville's younger brother and was born at "Ascot Vale", Birrell St, Bondi, 6/8/1913.

I thought that KGH/HG Palmer sets were different from Calstan (CALibrated to STANdard!) as we serviced lots of HGP sets, but I remember the boss saying he hated "Calstan crap". He also disliked Stromberg Carlson TVs though he said their radios were top stuff. In my time I've never seen a Calstan or a Strommy TV so can't comment.
Funny thing was he closed the shop and got a job at a large hospital doing their repairs. The bloody place was full of Calstan TVs and radiograms!

Calstan valve radios were still in service on just about every ward at Gladesville Hospital when I worked there between 1990 and 1994. These were in a very basic and boring maple or Tassie oak cabinet with a metallic thread speaker grille cloth and a Perspex tuning dial. Very 1960s stuff so these radios were barely 30 years old at the time.
We used to call in the Government Supply Office to repair Thorn coloured televisions and the odd HMV Casino B&W telly, and U-matic VCRs but never the radios. They were as reliable as a radio could be but they weren't exactly of the collectable category but probably are now, 25 years later.

There is a KGH Tasma style radio currently attracting a bit of an interest on ebay. It reminded me of this thread so I thought I should lay to rest the exact location of Harris House.
Today 95-97 Oxford is quite a distance from the corner of Newland Rd, so for Harris House to be at the rear of 95-97 and still have an address given as corner of Oxford and Newlands then either it was huge or the blocks have since been renumbered.
Yes, the street numbers in Oxford St, or at least in that part of the street, have most definitely changed since the 1920's.

The picture shown is a view of the south/west corner of Oxford & Newland St. On the right (corner) is the Harris shoe store, with the Oxford street address. This was built in the early 1900's. On the left is Harris House, built 1921, with the Newland street frontage. Though both buildings are attached you can see clearly that they were not built at the same time.
Sadly, both buildings are long gone and the site redeveloped.

No, don't search for it, put the link into your browser.
Article makes interesting reading, fairly typical of The Truth newspaper....

Guys, when posting links, don't forget the http or https prefix so ZScan picks it up and converts it to a hyperlink. I've changed it manually on this occasion.

Sorry guys.
The http was missing from the address when in Firefox. I had no idea, or even to think, when copying and pasting the link.
Anyway, I found this gem. A picture of Harris' shoe shop before the addition of Harris House.

I think all the browsers do that now which is bloody annoying but that is what the market is forcing on us I guess. That said, once you click on the address bar the fully qualified URL should be exposed for copy/paste.

Yes, it's a nuisance.
If it weren't for the http vs https issue, the URL fixing utility could flesh out the links itself.
