Does anyone have a spare speaker grille for a 1956 Astor SJ television for sale? I'm in need of one for my set. Alternatively, is there anyone who offers re-production grilles?

Chris

Hi Vic,

Are you sure? I'd doubt that a reproduction or replacement speaker grille for an Aussie Astor SJ would surface on EBay America.

The speaker grille is an actual plastic grille. There is a photo in the below link.

Perhaps Vicadillac is referring to grille cloth?

Be a while yet before we get reproduction parts for Australian televisions, apart from labels which are fairly easy to make.

I've been thinking of constructing a temporary replacement, just so there isn't a gaping big hole in the front of the set. It won't be anywhere near the original though, as I don't have the equipment or experience for that.

I'm thinking of cutting a piece of timber to fit the opening on the front, cutting some holes in it for the audio, and covering it with some nice matching fabric. I'll see if I can find or replicate a nice little Astor badge to stick on the fabric too.

Balsa may be the go, though probably too soft for the longer term. Paint with full gloss enamel for a smooth finish.
