Congratulations on getting it working.

Your Kriesler TV should be be able to receive VHF analogue TV transmissions unless it has already been shut down in your area. I'm not sure when the Noosa area has analogue turned off.

If you have a colour TV with an analogue tuner use it to confirm that you can receive channels 2, 7, 9 and 10. If you can then the Kriesler should as well.

The Kriesler may still have a fault in it even though you can see a snowy raster.

Ring up the Digital Ready people on 1800 20 10 13 to find out if you still have analogue TV in your area. The only info I have says regional Queensland is being turned off "2nd half of 2011".

If your aerial has a coaxial (round) socket, you'll probably need a "balun" to connect it to the ribbon (flat cable)terminals on the back of the TV. Hardwares sometimes have baluns in the electrical section.

I'm not into TVs, but if I were, I think I'd be hitting the "how to" repair and service books of the era. They appear on eBay from time to time. Wink

If it's a dud tuner, unless it's a faulty valve or dirty contacts on the switch, they can't be repaired without specialist test equipment. Back then, it was usual for tuners to be replaced on exchange.

It's too early to say if it's the tuner that's at fault or another problem. If you can get a "snowy" raster then the tuner is a possibility or a fault in the early IF stages is another. If you get a white raster then the problem is around the later IF stages or Video Amp.

It'd have to be an old VCR, because recent machines only have a UHF output, useless with a 50s or 60s TV. With older VCRs the RF output is usually on VHF channel 0 or 1, and often there's a switch on the back with "0" and "1" marked.

Couldn't you try "rabbit ears" with your b&w sets?

If your HMV colour portable can pick up TV stations with just a pair of rabbit ears, the B&W sets should be able to as well. I recently had a little AWA valve portable picking up stations from 100 km away with just a bit of wire connected to the antenna terminals. The picture was poor but watchable.

Old B&W TV's are designed to use 300 ohm antennas and use two terminals as a connection. To use the modern 75 ohm antennas (with the plug connection) make sure you use a 300 ohm to 75 ohm balun transformer with the modern antenna. Otherwise, just connect a separate piece of wire to each terminal to make a quick test antenna.
Set the TV to the strongest local channel (use the colour set to check) and adjust the fine tuning control. You should see or hear at least something other than just snow.

Go through all the channels one by one and look closely at the screen each time. Do you only get plain snow, or do you get faint patterns or lines on some channels?
