The thing with PCB's and valves is, you can never rule out cracked solder joints. often the easiest way to know is wiggling valves when the set is on and seeing if the behaviour changes

It certainly is pointing to that... I will try it!

Update:

Happy Halloween!

I have a picture and sound! Endlich!
After all, it turned out to be my modulator (Ikusi Maw-200) that was the problem! The channels had to be set to Aus (I thought that the modulator was automatically set to Aus, but no), and the video carrier offset by +0.5MHz, and now the Calstan/Admiral Frankenstein (Fitting, seeing as it is Halloween..!) is at an almost complete stage.

The contrast is still very low, and after replacing all the IF valves, a 6BZ6 x2 and a 6CB6, no luck. Tomorrow I will see whether the cable to the IF board has I high resistance between the inner and outer, and continuity between the inner ends. As well as ground continuity. I will send Brad a photo to attach.

There are also some other annoying faults, e.g an unpleasant bright line going vertically across the screen (fixed by replacing some electro), and the screen being stretched, but when I unstretch it the bottom of the screen isn't being scanned, stuff like that. To quote Ian, "All the annoying niggly bits". Couldn't have said it better myself.

Edit: The pictures really don't do it justice...
Edit #2: A Westinghouse W2111 may be in the works...
Thanks!

Oli

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Thank you Brad for uploading the pictures!

This just about wraps up this restoration, like I said, still a bit to do, but I'm pretty happy with the result.

Thanks all,
Oli
