The Japanese portables started to appear on the market around the mid 1960's but I don't think they started to become a serious threat to the local manufacturers until the early 1970's.
The portable radio market was an entirely different story, the imports were serious competition from the early 1960's onwards.

TV Collector, thanks for your feedback, greatly appreciated, just the answer I was looking for from someone in the know.....
It will stay as it is then.... If I can get it to power up I think the novelty of a working B&W Television is cool! Especially if I can play the old Atari on it!l...
Can you suggest ...should I try it with a 12V battery first or mains power...from a safety point of view...thanks in advance?

I'd power it on 12v first as it's gentler on the TV. Once it has run on 12v it should be fine to use on mains power.

Does anyone in this thread hold a collection of the "P series" service manuals/schematics?
Still searching ....
Marty.

Here is the manual for the AWA P17, P18 and Thorn 7233 models. There is also a larger scale version of the schematic as a separate file.

I just found this old post.
I have an AWA P6, orange, in good condition externally, when powered up I get a white horizontal line across the screen. Been a long time since I have worked on TV's. Can anyone give me a starting point.
Also, does anyone have a circuit on the P6 ?

White line means frame (vertical) oscillator isn't working. According to the schematic it's a transistorised model, so have a look around TR401, TR402, TR403 especially electrolytic caps. Also make sure the relevant windings of the scan coils (yoke) is intact and getting a signal from TR403. There's plugs & sockets there, make sure they aren't burnt out or bad joints.
