The Aldi TV's are a fairly ordinary lot.
I do a fair bit of traveling as part of my job which means staying in a lot of regional hotels so I get to see a lot of the cheaper brand TV's.
The Aldi offerings have extremely poor audio and the picture quality is fine as long as there is no movement in the vision.
A panning crowd shot sees the image degenerate into a jigsaw puzzle.
Lipsync is often out by a second or so.
You have to change channels to bring that back.
Kogan sets are not much better.
Hisense seems to be the best of the cheaper brands from my experience.
At home we have an LG Oled set which has a very nice picture and audio is acceptable (for a flat panel set).
It handles moving vision without any blocking whatsoever.
It seems you get what you pay for.

OLED screens are fantastic and I wish I had a lazy $14,000 for LG's 77 inch (I think) one. OLED has the same characteristics that plasma screens had in that they are not backlit, which means the pixels do the illumination work and the contrast is light years ahead of LCD.

How they get the screens only 4mm thick, I don't know.

There is a known bug in the open source FFMPEG software that causes the audio sync to slip over time. Most set makers use this code, some fix it and don't submit the changes (which they are required to do under the terms of the licence).

$14,000 dollars for a TV, ? Hmm , no wonder some men work every day till their dead.
I still feel the best viewing for movies is on a good quality CRT. Which I guess is why I don't own a flat screen.

Ford..Philco

Just been catching up on company history, a fascinating journey. Philips prevented from using their name in US "because it sounded like Philco" (that's a stretch, they could have used better legal representation?)

Got sidetracked on Philco computers - 1950s style mainframes with control consoles that displayed registers, plus 'futuristic' tape reel units --- but in reality only having the power of a Commodore-64.

Soon after Ford takeover in early sixties, computer division closed as Ford was interested in their industry-leading solid state car radios.

Regarding trademarks, Apple took Woolworths to court about ten years ago alleging trademark abuse on Woolworths' new logo which happens to be a stylised apple. However the two look nothing alike and Apple's testimony that consumers would think Apple owned Woolworths or that Woolworths would do something and alleged that the link would cause that to make people believe that Apple was up to no good was thrown out of court.

It was a huge loss for Apple because they tend to defend their logo with vigour. That said, I am glad they lost. It was a frivolous waste of money and the court's time.

As for Philips and Philco, I agree that neither sound alike and that contest was also a waste of money and time. The logos of the two companies should have been ample to separate them.

Best years of my life were out in the field repairing TV’s.
From Black and White to Colour, just me, service vehicle and toolbox.
Wonderful, but started going downhill as natural attrition meant a slow climb in management.
It was good while it lasted.

I am a telly repairman at work, as much as one can be these days. Even though I work for a multibillion dollar multinational company there is still a budget to keep under control. I've been known to keep busted LCD televisions in stock and use bits and pieces out of them to keep other sets going. It is amazing how little there is in a telly now. A screen and then a motherboard about the height and width of a bible for the telly itself and a smaller power supply board alongside it.

Most often, the power supply boards die and these are swapped out and the telly put back in service. DECT phones (a mobile phone that only works inside a building and are connected to a PABX via an internal wireless network) and landline phones are kept in service for as long as possible the same way. Save busted ones and re-use the good bits that remain to keep others going.

I think we are a dying breed that tends to keep things going for as long as possible.
I always say "if you see something out the front of my house for hard waste collection rest assured it has had every ounce of useful life sucked out of it and is totally not repairable"
I hate seeing things thrown out when they could be repaired easily.
During the 90's every TV set in our house was from lawn shopping.

Its also an age thing, When I was boy nothing got thrown out unless it was stuffed, So you carry that habit a bit.
I love a good throw out and find it entertaining if it's in the right area, I have found some great finds over the years. But I also find it sad, When I lived in the northern districts and also the northern beaches ti was often sickening to see the waste and what people actually consider rubbish ..New bikes, newish furniture, newish appliances,,, I've seen amazing things just disregarded as junk when there are people struggling to get those basic things and this is why people drive from New castle just o go to the throwouts in the northern beaches and northern suburbs.  Some of my best finds where a 1972 Pinball machine I sold it for $1600 and a 1958 Herman Milar chair I sold it for 2200 hundred
Once I picked up a whole ute load of engineering Tools!  I met the guy who was throwing them out ! I said what's the story? He said my grandfather was an Engineer and I'm not interested !! Farrrr  Out !  I took the lot,I keep lots and then I took the rest over to the Engineering shop I worked in when I was 20.,, Gave them to my old boss ...  So its a very different attitude than when I was a boy and we were lucky if we found Billy Cartwheels on the throwouts ... I might put a photo on the forum of this 1950s Dresser I got off the throw outs and then I restored  it in 2k, It has Etched glass and I sprayed it back to its original colour ,But I did it in 2k

"Some of my best finds where a 1972 Pinball machine..."

Yeah, I would look for pinballs in the 1980s, had 32, sold them all when spooked by the GFC
Found many rare 1950s like Gottlieb 'Sluggin' Champ' (founder David Gottlieb was Jewish, from Milwaukee)
And the very nice Williams 'Wonderland' (founder Harry Williams was also Jewish)
I still have a rare late 40s Chicago Coin 'Spinball' (founder Gensburg brothers - GENCO -, were also Jewish)

(founders of Philips Electronics, the Philips brothers, were also Dutch-Jewish)

Wonderland & Sluggin' Champ were sold to the Paris Pinball Museum, here are those actual games today - see them when in Paris:

I Rarely come across them ,,Its not like the USA and I don't have an interest in them . I just knew I could sell it easy I took it home and put it in the Hallway and then I put it on ebay , It was an easy 1600 bucks. I also found a 10 cent Poker machine once and I kept that for a few years before selling it .
I think it will be a long time before I can be Amongst old stuff again now they closed the border due to the virus.
I'm now landlocked with no access to sales ,Auctions ,old estates !
An article in the news said the border may be closed for 2 years!!!I I never saw this one coming !!

Pete, the RadioFest will be back next year (I am assuming, anyway, as it has been roughly every two years before) and that will make up for lost ground this year. Hopefully they bring the Fest forward to the first half of the year because hundreds of people are champing at the bit to attend auctions and sales.

Was surprised to see a 'Sluggin' Champ' game in scene at Outback facility in Aust film 'Walkabout'. Production run for game was only 950.
