I'm new to radios and doesn't know much about them but I love all old and vintage stuff.
I just bought an old valve radio and would love to restore it.
So please bear with me if I ask some silly questions.

Cheers,

Gerrie.

Welcome.

Please post any questions in the Tech Talk section, but it will help us greatly if you can let us know the make and model of the set in question if known, or failing that the valve line-up (list of valve types used) and some in-focus well-lit photos (send to Brad the site Administrator).

If you need to remove valves to read the type code, be careful doing it, especially if they are the type that have bakelite bases. Remove via the base, not the glass envelope. Also, be careful about removing any top cap type valve connections as they can be corroded on.

I trust that you haven't tried to power-up the old radio -- doing so if the set hasn't been used for a long time can cause all sorts of otherwise avoidable problems.

Finally, do you have any experience with working on high voltage electrical/electronic equipment?

Yes I'm a tech, so I have high voltage electrical/data/communications experience.
