Hi there, my name is Ian, I'm not really into restoration (yet). I have about 20 Philips radios to restore during retirement, but after retiring 18 years ago I haven't found time to start. The reason for joining is that I have been asked to get an old set going, but I think that needs to be posted elsewhere. I did my radio & television apprenticeship with Philips spending 12 months on the 224 line (best mantle EVER) but that's only my opinion.

Welcome -

Now that's what I call a genuine retirement - taking the first 18 years to think about what to do next!
I'm sure you've got lots of knowledge to share here.
I have one Philips - a 123 that has been in my life since I was 2 years old. So I'd like to hear your reasons why the 224 is the best. Does each one contain a few drops of your blood?

Hi Ian and welcome

I hope you realise that suggesting a Philips 224 is the best mantel ever will open an enormous can of worms as everyone will chime in with their favourite set Grin
One of mine is the Astor Mickey Grande, model MZ.

Mail seems to be working at the moment. I just downloaded 12MB attachment from an outside address.

Can you please try sending again?

In response to 'best set', I guess it is all a matter of personal tastes. We've had a favourite set and ugliest set thread before (here). Strangely enough, everyone remained on friendly terms, which is a good thing. Smile

Welcome to the forums Ian.

Fantastic radio that Astor. Always wanted one but mostly end up out of reach when they come up on Ebay.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

My favourite varies by the day..., but this one of mine I like:

Or maybe this one
Smile

I restricted my discussion to my Aussie sets.
