Hi Guys,

I'm new here, and to vintage radio as well.
I've had the word out for some time, and a friend found
a valve radio in his Mother's shed that belonged to her husband.

It's not listed in the brands at this site, but is very close to this: http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/musicmast_mendelssohn_a523m.html but I did not get the cabinet.

I would like to bring the chassis back anyway, and hoping you guys can help me where I might get stuck.

I'm ok with modern components, but it may be difficult to
identify some caps. I imagine it would be difficult to find a
schematic. Even the radio museum doesn't actually list my model.

Four of the five valves I can identify match the list provided with that link, but the photograph of the chasis is not identical.

I do have this: Image Link

It was made in Stanley Street, Brisbane.

Welcome to the forums.

Here is what I have on Music Masters radios from that era with similar valve lineups:

What a pity you don't have the cabinet. Musicmasters made some stunning looking sets.

Your radio chassis date froms around 1950. Dial glasses are a fairly accurate way of dating radio's. 4QA (ABC), Mackay opened on 18/01/1951. The next two Queensland stations to open was 4GM (ABC), Gympie on 17/08/1951 & 4SO (ABC), Southport on 11/10/1952. Both 4GM & 4SO are missing from your dial-glass.

Thanks Guys, that's a cunning way to date a radio.
I would never have thought of that!

Mine has model A528 stamped on it,
although the "8" could be a "6", it's not clear,
but that's all, one of those numbers is correct.

Looks like I should shoot some messages,
I would love a schematic to eliminate doubt about other components.

It's unfortunately a bit sorry looking, but I think there's sill
merit in bringing it back.

I made a bit of a start without going into electronics:

I might not be keen enough to strip the whole thing,
but I'm considering it.. It would have to work first.

Valves are:
6U7G (the broken one with replacement on the way),
6J8GA,
6V6 GT/G
5Y3 GT
One more unidentified.
So it looks like the 1949 one (yay if it has made the '40s)

That one was a lost cause, so I tossed it, and got this one:

It's back, thanks to all who advised, and particularly STC,
without you, I think I would have ruined a new part and
had to buy it twice or something like that.

My heart is racing!
I totally understand this is much better, and I can only use a
modern speaker... the sound is still there.. it's like nothing else.

This is the third power up, and the first success.

You wouldn't read about it, but I've got the same radio
here right now, complete in cabinet.
There is a slight difference in the chassis, but it answers a
lot of questions I had about the first... what was the power socket connector, etc.

This should be easier to fix hopefully.
I got it from my family doctor, and hope to get it back to her family.

There's a note in it for me from 1979.
It's about the power supply.
I know who it is, and he's no longer with us.
It's owner's might appreciate that.
