Hi, would anyone have a copy of a circuit diagram for the AWA C48 radio or know where I can obtain one? I have searched the Internet and no luck. Some of the wires are broken, particularly near the audio transformer. Some of those wires also have deteriorated insulation and unfortunately are not colour coded like they are these days in electronics.

Hi, Kevin Chant has a AWA Fisk model 48 circuit on his web site, is that the one?

Fred.

The C48 Straight Six is a 1928 model. The 1929 C54 Radiola Battery Six has the same valve line-up as the C48 and its circuit could possibly be used as a guide.

Hi, MonchromeTV is correct on the type of radio I have, Fred. Just noticed the word I typed "Straight" did not come out correctly spelt. Fingers got tangled I'm afraid and I failed to check my spelling before sending.

Many thanks MonochromeTV for the pointer to where some information can be gained. What I have looked at is fantastic as it includes servicing guides in voltage and continuity checks. Very useful and helpful in understanding the process of fault finding, something that I need to learn as I restore the radio.

You can edit your post to fix that.

Hi Bushman,

I just found your post regarding the AWA C48 schematic because I was searching for information for my C48 restoration. I found a schematic in my July 1999 HRSA Radio Waves. I could scan it and mail it to you if you still needed it. Not sure how the HRSA would react if I posted one of their schematics on the web, so I don't think I could just put it on the forum. The C54 Schematic is pretty much identical apart from the extra input tuning stage and the phono input on the C54.

My restoration is a much bigger job. I have a good case and a hand full of parts, but no chassis at all. The curator at the Science Works Museum was kind enough to let me have some time with their C48 to measure the chassis metal work to make a new chassis, but there is a limit to how much you can measure without taking the chassis out and I would love to have a photo of the bottom of the chassis to make sense of the wiring layout.

I also have a couple of questions regarding some hole diameters in the front panel that I have just taken a guess on.

Let me know if you can help out.

Frank

Hi Frank,

Apologies for not responding sooner. Work commitments and a computer whose hard drive is going into overdrive!.

I, too, have managed to find a circuit for the C48. The circuit for the C54 is similar and I was using that to find my way around the radio before finding a copy of the C48 circuit at the recent Radio Fest. You need not worry about HRSA frowning upon copying their material.

As luck would have it, I have yet to dismantle the chassis so photos taken before that will be made.

The metal chassis in my radio is not in good nick due to rust, and initially I was going to try a rust removal exercise however once I removed the chassis from the cabinet the extent of the rust was a more apparent.

I read in another forum post a member was getting a metal fabricator to make a metal frame for the chassis of another radio, and I think it would be the preferred way to go.

I have taken photos of the radio both inside and out of the cabinet and so far I have not been happy with the quality of the detail in the photos. There is also an annoying shadow on one corner of the photos, so a shopping trip is in order for a new camera. If you are prepared to accept a little less sharp photos then I can send them to you.

Regarding the hole diameters on the front panel, let me know what you want to know.

Hi Bushman,

As luck would have it I have a spare set of metalwork that I have cut out for my radio. I can't guarantee the total accuracy of the panels as I only had limited access to the radio I was looking at, but you are more than welcome to them. If nothing else I would be happy to give them to you so you could let me know where I have made mistakes in the drawings.

It is mainly the holes for the volume control and the tuning window that I would like to tie down a little better. So far all the parts are fitting together and the tuning caps etc. are all in the right place, but it would be nice for a real comparison with an original out of the cabinet.

I am new to the forum so I am not sure if my email address is visible to you. If not please let me know and I am sure we will work it out.

Regards, Frank.

P.S. I have a friend who has a Laser Cutter who is happy to cut out any job for me for $50 minimum if the drawings are in the right format and so far the two sets of panels for my C48 only costed me $50. I am more than happy to split the cost of a second set of panels if you can tell me where I have stuffed up.

I am not sure if my email address is visible

It is, and visibility can be set on or off via Control Panel.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for allowing your email address to be used to send to you some photos. I have just sent some and will send more as soon as I acquire a new camera.

I hope they will be of help.

Your spare cut panels I would like to have and will reimburse you for half the cost. It is good to have skilled people who can assist with the making of replacement panels for the radios. Very handy.

Bushman.

Hi Bushman,

I haven't heard from you since you sent your email. Did you get my emails with the pictures of my chassis and the schematic?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards, Frank.

Hi Frank,

Just sent you an email reply and photos. Apologies for the delay. House painters arrived over the weekend and many errands needed doing to make the painter's time worthwhile.

More photos to follow and if there are any specific photos of the radio required, just let me know.

Bushman

No Worries,

I know how much time house renovations take. I am in the middle of some myself.

When you get a moment the measurements of the front panel I asked for would be all I need for the moment and just a general photo of the bottom of the chassis would be good. I am sure there will be other things later, but that will get me started.

Regards, Frank.
