This is the top cover (when photo posted) the M with an arrow is a brand I have seen somewhere. These things are still being made originally invented by George Wigginton 1918.

Can anyone identify the brand?

It could by its form be Omega split in half or done that way to be a stylised "M'. I can remember seeing it before

The label in the cartouche could be just a symbol with a stylised device?

Something = Measure I think.

Inside the slot it looks like a piece of Tassie oak rubbed with paprika.

Measure for max of 8 seconds makes sense, to prevent burn out.

8S = "Measure only 8 sec" and is a warning. These are merely a voltage indicator & the coil will get hot. That which looks like wood is actually the window and that is the ferrous oxide that was once the spring. The indicator is pulled down against a spring as the voltage increases. If there is interest I can post a pic of the pointer & open circuit coil assy and what is left of the spring?

Curved bit is actually the pointer, there is a guide within to keep it in position & this is likely, as the rod is seized, to have contributed to the coils problem / demise.

One patent: Wiggy is the registered trademark for a common solenoid voltmeter used in North America derived from a device patented in 1918 by George P. Wigginton. Wigginton Electric Company.

Another Patent appears May 26th 1925 But they are not necessarily the manufacturer of this one.
