"Brickies' Twine" that you can get from Bunnings etc actually makes an excellent substitute, and it's virtually unbreakable.
Good quality dental floss also works well as it's made from linen fibre, which is what the old dial cords were made from.
It's also waxed which improves the grip on the driving knob.

I use fishing line, as it lasts forever and doesn't stretch.

The polymer stuff will slip on many drives as it is either too stiff and / or cannot get traction. WES components had the real stuff. Bearing places new spring.

On that, if you spray the old nylon types of the fifties with circuit board cleaner, or similar: It will go hard & you will have to replace it.

One thing I see used quite often is ordinary string. This is the absolutely worst thing you could try. It frays, it flattens out, and it easily slips on the tuning shaft. It also quickly absorbs dirt and water. On top of that, it soon breaks.
