I was given a radio with those valves, and a broken case and faulty power cord, by a neighbour at age 13. It was experimented on to within an inch of its life. I recall that a 6A8G gave similar performance to the ECH33, with 6K8G being a bit lower gain and the 6J8G lower still. I recall using a 6AR7GT in place of the EBF35 with a little improvement in gain.

Not hugely worried about the gain of the tuner as long as it functions

I just wanted to point out, don't make the mistake of getting a ECH33B - the top cap is much bigger!
