Does anyone have any of these?

They were used with the last valve series - 6X9, 6U9, 6Y9 etc.

A valve a day keeps the transistor away...

Ian.
Do you need some, or is this just a general question?
I do have some new ones, but I somehow think that I will never see a series 8 Astor again.

Wayne.

Hi Labrat

I was considering the idea of a valve radio hobby project using just a 6Y9 and currently available parts.

Idea was to run the small pentode as converter and the large one as reflexed IF and audio output. It would have AGC using a couple of diodes as an RF attenuator. Objective to get same performance as a 50's 4 valve mantle radio. Rule - no semiconductors other than diodes. Ultimate performance 1 valve radio!

The 6Y9 is readily available but I wasn't sure about the sockets.

Hi Ian.
I finally found the sockets. I shall post a picture of them.
They are brand new, and are a high quality type.
Ceramic base. Shield between the pins, and two earthing lugs on the chassis mount.

I have unhidden my e-mail address so you can contact me.
All I need is your address so that I can post them to you.

Your proposed project sounds interesting.
What would you do if you were to incorporate another valve?
Something to ponder.

Wayne.

Hi Wayne

Thanks for the offer of the sockets, I will take you up on that soon as I finish my Kriesler 79-2 project.

I did give some thought to what a 2nd valve might be. Likely candidate is 6V9. Options are:
.
1. Unadventurous AM radio - 6V9 pentagrid - mix-osc, 6Y9 small pentode IF, 6V9 triode 1st audio, 6Y9 large pentode audio out. No reflexing or fancy stuff. Negative feedback around the audio to trade some of the excess gain for quality. Data on these tubes indicate such a radio should be a fairly strong performer.
Thought about using the triode as an emitter-follower style detector but it's too close to the other end of the IF gain stage to be stable with any IF on it I think.

2. FM radio - 6Y9 triode gg RF amp, pentagrid converter, 6Y9 small pentode as synchronous FM demod (often used in TVs this way with no preceding IF stage) and large pentode audio out. Not sure how well pentagrid would work at 100MHz though. I'll have to model it to find out.

Seems like there are a lot of NOS decal tubes around, prices are low. Or maybe it's just low demand, more likely.

Why am I interested in decal tubes? Decals and compactrons were the last hurrah of the thermionic era.
