I just noticed this on Ebay, a cheap AM transmitter converted from a Kriesler 11-81 radio originally made in 1959.

Naturally, I cannot vouch for the quality of the item, though it if works it would be useful to those who don't have the time or knowledge to make their own.

You could get a signal generator cheaper, you just have to be sure it can modulate audio.

It appears an RF siggen isn't as cheap as I thought, at least if you wanted it right now from eBay.
I'd still be going this way:
