the push button tuning

Had four presets. Who would think the public would want more than 4 channels?

Who would think the public would want more than 4 channels?

I remember a time in my life when I had a choice of two, one local channel and the ABC. No subscription TV of any sort at the time though video libraries and picture theatres were more popular. That said, yes it was an obvious lack of foresight when considering the future - perhaps an early form of planned obsolescence.

4 Channels would be enough.

The cooking show
The renovating show
The singing show
The police show

Oh, hang on, that's what we have now

Which is why I rarely switch my TV on anymore, and also why I let digital conversion happen without bothering to buy a new set.

I remember a time when the thought of taking the TV away would have been anathema. Now I don't care if it goes or it doesn't. As long as I have the Internet and DVDs, I have practically no interest in what local TV broadcasters are showing.

I have heard plenty of comment along the lines of " Why would you want to buy X number of channels of crap?"

In New Zealand in the early 70s I'm sure they only had one channel! But all the shows on it were good!

On the subject of the Bush 21", it would be good if a collector would do a technical review on one of these, I was a fan of these unique high performance deluxe sets. A tech from England once told me that back in the UK, Bush were the "Rolls Royce of television".

Their four-channel tuner may have originated in England where there were only 3 channels in London at the time?

I heard that Bush sets in the UK were infamous for problems with the "Instant-start" circuits that earned them the nicknames "Burning Bush" and "Curtain burners".

Bush sets...nicknames "Burning Bush" and "Curtain burners"

All British brands eventually suffered bitter defeat from crushing Asian price competition.

I imagine they cut a lot of corners before they went under.

I recall there being numerous fires attributed to standby mode on colour TVs when they first started appearing in Oz, but I don't recall a particular brand being involved.

There was also a brand of CRT computer monitor I think KTX around 2000, or a bit earlier that the fire brigade had caused to be recalled as they were sick of them causing fires.

The Bush had selenium HT rectifier stack that needed little AWA silicon diodes tacked across it to bring the voltage back up to par. They had much more video & sync processing using lots of 6BL8s. There was also a foam rubber ring to seal out dust between picture tube and safety glass.

There happens to be a console version of a Bush-Simpson TV on Ebay at the moment with a couple of days left to go. Easy enough to find just search for "Bush-Simpson"
The only catch is it needs a replacement CRT as the old one has been necked.

I didn't think the Bush TV's were much different to all the other average sets of the day aside from being a split chassis set. The circuit is typical for the period with no extra valve stages than usual. The one interesting thing I did note was they used multivibrator oscillators for both vertical and horizontal deflection so there is no need to worry about oscillator transformers going open circuit.
