Hi all,

I picked up an old Astor radio, which according to the RadioMuseum.org website, is a 1950 Astor GN. It's in very rough shape, and I don't have the skills or parts to restore it electronically. I would, however, like to have a shot at restoring it to displayable condition at least.

The set is in need of two new knobs for the power/volume and the tuner on the front, a new back for the set (as it's missing the back), and a new dial scale.

The set is similar to the one linked below, though my one uses two miniature 7 and 9 pin tubes in place of the two centre octals (one of which is shielded).

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/astor_gn_2.html.

Thank you,

Chris

Tell him I sent you.

I may have some suitable knobs, I'll look tomorrow

Hi Ben,

Thank you! I've sent you a reply email, and I'm sending one to Steve now.

Vic, how did you remove the chassis? I removed the four screws from the underside, but there still seems to be something at the front holding it in place.

Chris

I see you have the later version of the GN with the 6AN7 & 6AV6 in place of the 6J8GA & 6B6G.

Some also used a X79 (6AE8) in place of the 6AN7.
Though these two valves are electrically similar they are not plug and play and require a socket re-wire.
