I note in Radio Waves and other places, no adds relating to re-coning old speakers.

Above has a 6.25" dia (worst diameter to find) Rola Electrodynamic speaker. 2500 ohm field. Modifying to take a modern speaker is a challenge.

To avoid this I am looking for a new cone as the one in it is polling and not in good shape. This is one with the center spider, not one with the support on the outside, base of the cone.

Back in this post;

http://vintage-radio.com.au/default.asp?f=1&th=582&offset=2.

George had the speaker for his Healing Minor reconed. Maybe there is still someone around that does reconing...

I googled "speaker re-cone Melbourne" and saw quite a few results. Same in Sydney and Brisbane. Obviously the main market is modern music amp and PA speakers, but I'm sure you could find a suitable one.

Thanks for feedback.

The modern speaker was the issue with a few of those. I will have to contact them as they may not have had dealings with this type of speaker

Let us know how you go, if there is someone around that does reasonably priced reconing they'd get a lot of business from the members here. I've never bothered enquiring as I figured a recone would cost more than most of my radios are worth!

I would agree with that "cost" sentiment there is another post here where I am going to have a cabinet photo sent, or posted on the forum.

This was around $160 + a new badge to have the wooden cabinet re-finished by some one that knew what they were doing and had the stuff to do it. That is a trap: If you need to buy stuff you are never going to use, my option may be cheaper, for a better job in the long run.

So far &150 to over $200 is the quote. I think I might look at antique radio supplies, for DIY cone.

I can send photo's of the speaker. But in keeping with the HMV 880 this could work out to be $cary. I am sure that the original cone not was made of semi precious metal, or similar substance.

Addendum: I note Brad has a link to my photo of the HMV 880 ( number on set obscure but circuit matched) in the post by "Gra" in "General discussion" I do have a photo of the chassis and the cabinet side by side showing the new sticker on top better.

George, next time you speak with this gentleman can you please ask him if he'd like his contact details placed in the services directory?

If he is fine with it I am happy to add him.

Thanks George, I will post the info later tonight when I am on my rounds. The reason I was interested in doing this is because a few people have enquired about re-coning in the past and I've had nowhere to send them.
