My father has a valve radio/phonogram that he is thinking of selling but we are unsure how to get a value for it. The radio is a valve radio - Stromberg Carlson with Magnavox speakers. The phonogram has Columbia, London, England on the needle arm but no other markings. It is in a Ricketts and Thorp Ltd, Sydney cabinet. It is in working order and in excellent condition. Can someone help with a value or point me in the right direction? Many thanks, Jella12 P.S If I work out how to attach photos to this post I will do so

Having watched the vintage Radio auctions on Ebay for years, as a general rule, radiograms seem to attract little interest. Possibly other members can explain why.

Radiograms and consoles attract less interest because they are too large to include in most collections. I own fourteen but even with that small number I am just about at the limit of what I can own due to space.
Are there exceptions to the rule? Yes, but once again space is a consideration and so is being married. If a console from the late 1920s or early 1930s with turned legs and optional gramophone mounted on top comes along, say one of the large six-legged Airzones or an early American brand, these can still fetch good amounts of money - typically up to $1,000. These fancy consoles are very rare now by comparison to the more common mass-produced plywood boxes and the more modern radiograms and you'll one see one get a new owner every three or four months.
Late 1930s as well as 1940s and 1950s consoles are still fairly commonplace but because of the space issue they sell for far less than what they could be worth.
Jella12, if you'd like photos attached to your post please e-mail them to Brad mail.vintage-radio.com.au and I will insert them for you.

G'day Peter,
I have the OP's e-mail address. When I get home from work I'll draw their attention back to this thread and hopefully there might be some good news.

Hi Pedantik, no the radio has not been sold yet. Dad is still interested in selling it as he doesn't have the space in his home. I have more photos if you wish to see them, it is beautiful piece. You can contact me direct at jella iprimus.com.au if you like. Thanks, Bernadette
