If your quick and can arrange the transport, there is a lovely Philips console B&W TV (valve) on Ebay at the moment. It is only $10 and located in Sydney but transport is going to be a real challenge.

I know, but the TV screen went dark the seller said, so I can't have a TV with a non working screen, I am getting a HMV console this Sunday for $50

The seller said the screen had static BEFORE it went dark. To me this means the CRT is good.
What has happened is that one of the old wax capacitors has died and caused a no picture fault. This doesn't mean the CRT died. Failing parts in valve TV's is to be expected.
Besides for $10 you can't go wrong! (Plus it's a PHILIPS!)

Yeah, and it looks to be in great condition, externally! I'd love to get it, but Sydney's pretty far from us, so getting a console from Sydney is out of the question.

Yes, to be more accurate, new polyester caps to replace those horrible leaky waxed paper ones. A few electrolytic capacitors may need replacing as well.
Something that you'll have to deal with is the youngest valve TV is now around 40 years old. They were never intended to last that long and component failure due to age is to be expected.
If you want to have operational valve TV's you'll need to be able to carry out your own repairs or know someone who can do it for you.

Chris can, he knows solid state and a bit of valve, so yeah, I'm getting a HMV tomorrow and I'm going to see if it works
