Hi guys,

Just wondering if someone knows where I can get 4 knobs for a black (don't really mind though) HMV little nipper or similar 1/4" D knob.

There doesn't seem to be much around on the web, that has the longer fluted part of the knob that this requires... as the pot shafts are flush with the face of the radio.

Cheers

Bj

Extension shafts, if needed, can be hard to find.

For knobs, try Steve Savell. His contact details are here:

Original is best.

I think RS & Jaycar may have, but there may be issues with space & you may have to cut the existing shaft..... not a good idea in my book, with that style of set.

Normally I just custom make an extension shaft, or socket.

I emailed Steve,

That was possibly a bad idea, as he no longer carries knobs due to issues with people ripping him off. That has to be the longest upset/angry man email I've read in a while!

Anyway I'm going to try and find a suitable long reach generic knob that fits without modification so I can at least use the set.

Cheers for the replies.

Bj

I was chasing a particular Radiola knob for a long time. Ended up buying a tired-looking Radiola for $10 at an HRSA swap meet and now have the correct 3 matching knobs for a bargain price.

I may be able to offload the tired Radiola for a few bucks, to boot ... unless I decide to fix it first.

Those knobs and many like it had a profound habit of disintegrating as the plastic aged & lost it's plasticiser.

If you look at the catalogues locally there is virtually Nothing in new from them.

I did see a knob add in HRSA Radio Waves, a copy of which I do not currently have.

I see one in the photo, do I assume the rest are missing?

Hi Marc,

Yes the rest are missing. It was my Grandad's and I want to return it to "functional-ness" after repairing the amp and speaker.
Cheers

I have refurbished several of these, they are rarely hard to do.

There is a black covered audio transformer in some of these They seem to be somewhat unreliable.

Should be easy to sort out while looking for knobs.

BeJay,

Could not agree with you more on your comment.

I was after knobs for a radio I needed, sent a message and I have never heard such drivel in all my life.

Did you find the knobs you need?

I did check the derelict chasses etc here. As I expected, not a complete set of knobs in sight. Several had none or they disintegrated.

Do not overlook kitchen appliances, several of them have recessed type knobs.

I have in desperation, in order to make a set functional, resorted to, turning up a knob.

If just the centre is gone? Sometimes you can get away with lightly shrinking (oil the shaft) some thin shrink tube onto a shaft, then moulding a spigot on it using "Knead It". This stuff and others like it, can be machined.

The top of an empty 12Gauge shotgun cartridge (old detinator removed), works well with this stuff, to make an emergency knob & is more interesting than a bottle cap.

I did eventually find some knobs that almost look like the vintage, they are a little small, but it works just nicely.

I noticed you can't post pictures on this forum, so have a look here -> http://bjshed.better-than.tv/

Cheers

If you have old knobs for those & only the centre is damaged and they have not crystalised (many plastic ones on many makes have) Don't toss them.

As they are getting scarce & I have not heard of anyone making them. There is the off chance that it might be salvageable for a rough set.

eg. Turn out the centre & replace. Lathes are handy.

Unfortunately it only came with the one knob which is in working condition - the other 3 where missing. I will certainly hold onto the one working one though.. You never know when it might be useful Smile

... or, one-by-one, you may find another 3 to match.

That is fact.

I was in an antique shop recently & scored a knob off of an Astor JJ. One of our Club members was looking for some. Even found some for a Philips at a Ham radio swap.
