Can we feature the white one with it's missing converter.

6AN7 (9pin) 1953 A102 perhaps?

^ The A120 of 1953 is the only Airzone that I can find with a 6M5 in it.

There's a similar looking set on eBay at the moment:

... but its valves don't look like 6M5, 6N8 or 6AN7.

There are two top caps and a shoulder type. So what's going on?

Did not see the valves. I did fix a set that may have been an Aizone, that had the Radar EF50 in it ... did not see any unusual blips on the CRO.

Empty sky?

Did not see the valves.

Valves are clearly shown in the rear photo of that eBay item (which I have set to width 455).

One is EBF35. Another appears to be EL33A:

I've shrunk the photo a bit so it fits on the page. Tonight I will link it to the larger version. Wink

This model appeared on Radio of the Week last week though mine contains the later version of the chassis equipped with baseless valves. Photos to come.

It is one of the few coloured mantel sets I have whose cabinet is in mint condition.

The audio looks like Philips valves EL33, EBF35?

Converter is not original with Defence Department on it.

Probably 6A8 could be a ring in and is also supposed to be the philips. Do not over look 6J8 & equivalent.

Breville 730 I just refurbished has (correct) Philips ECH35 (6J8)

Possibly Reflex set

Dunno what's happening there. As per instructions, I set it to 455 wide in Photobucket, but it appeared wider on here.

Ah, so there was more than one chassis for that model. And it's still showing as Radio of the Week.

Sometimes those settings don't work for some reason. WA2SIE has had mixed results with it. There's nothing to worry about though.

There was also two other cabinets, an earlier bakelite one made in a number of colours; walnut, white, marbled white, mottled green, mottled blue, mottled pink and there may be a red one too; and a timber cabinet which was made in two styles, one for Airzone-badged sets and another for sets badged Malvern Star.

Not unusual to have the same cabinet & variants. Kriesler "Beehive" had more than 26.

Even the Astor RK "Tablegram" had different turntables in the same basic cabinet.

I have two sets of photo's you may like for feature. Radiola 519M & Breville 730.

However thay have the mail server shut down, as they upgrade from 3rd go to 4th go.

This Airzone Brad they used several types of valve line ups in this model , some were all miniature valves some were a mixture of Octal and miniature - the one sporting the el33a thats no ring in, thats correct ive owned 2/ 3 as same .

If fact during Astor even early 1957 with the very last of the large Bakelite table - grams being produced you did still have chassis with a mixture of valves - they used what they had - there was no set ''died in the wool formula '' for valves used in certain sets !

Aristone in 1950 sold very similar set to the Airzone featured here but used a 1945 ex military EF50 loctal valve in amongst 3 other miniatures - its amazing what they did - the EF50 had enough gain to blow your speaker to hell and back !

Healing even used the EF50 in their tall Bakelite 1947 at times !

The el33a was used by many!!! high gain monster lol ! getting hard to find now though !

I have six of these sets, albeit one with a smashed cabinet that I will wreck for spares when the need arises, and not one of them had a model number stamped or stencilled on them however I assume that at some stage every radio made in a factory would have had a model number provided somewhere.

After about 23 years of collecting I am still left wondering if the manufacturers expected their products to last as long as they have.

Photos to come - it's raining cats and dogs at the moment and I don't have cover between the house and workshop.

I spent this arvo doing an electrical restoration on this receiver. It's been a very long time since it has been in service and at the time of writing it sounds loud and clear.

She's an A101 with the 4EIAI chassis.

Another piece of Australia's manufacturing heritage is back, for all time. Smile
