Hi all,
A friend of mine recently found in almost perfect nick an Astor Plymouth TV in a beautiful red wood cabinet on the side of the road being thrown out for hard rubbsih collection.
He's considering refurbishing it and turning it into something else using the red wood casing as the cabinet ie. a fish tank or display cabinet or something.
I thought to a collector it may be of some value. Does anyone know how may the cost or if I need to provide anymore details to narrow down what type of Astor Plymouth it is?

Thanks Blingbling.
Not sure if it works yet. Haven't tried it. If it did work, how much roughly would they go for do you think?
Only reason asking, is because we're not collectors and have no idea to be honest. It just looked great!

Televisions can usually go for between $20 and $200 and maybe a little higher for a rare model. If the cabinet is in good nick and the innards are complete then it is best to revive it as a television from a historical point of view. These sets will easily survive the scrapping of analogue transmissions with the use of a set top box and VHF video modulator so there is everything to like about keeping that set, even as a conversation piece.
You'll feel good too, when you turn it on and show your friends their favourite digital transmissions coming in on a set made some 60 years ago.

Brad's estimation on value is fairly accurate though I doubt an Astor Plymouth would sell for more than $100 unless someone particularly wanted it. Don't expect to get rich trying to sell it. Only a few very early model TV's sell for over $100 in most cases.
The Astor Plymouth models are attractive sets dating from 1963. It would be best to avoid the temptation to convert it into something else as they are too nice to a TV to suffer such a fate.
If it is easy for you to do so, you can confirm it is the model I'm thinking of by looking at the left hand side of the metal chassis visible through the TV back panel. The model number is printed on the chassis. My guess is that it will be a model P31L/4A-BA. The model number is also printed on the back panel but will probably have faded so much as to be unreadable.

It is a shame that most people just don't have the space for these things otherwise many more would collect them.

That's a nice set, very architectural in style. You've even got a tray underneath for the digital box and DVD. I'd consider buying it if it went on sale.

I drove to Melbourne today to buy the Plymouth. I'd thought it over, and the combination of the unusual shape and the lacquered rosewood was too good to refuse.

I've just got to clear space for it now! Still, a good excuse to have a tidy up.
