Something in that photo just reminded me of something. I seem to remember hearing that Philips felt threatened by MD development for a short time and managed to increase playing time for audio CDs from 60 minutes to 74 minutes to match MD.

Then I think Sony went one step further & produced the 80 minute MD that was compatible with the models that played 74 minute discs.

Pity that the technique for recording and then re-recording the MD uses did not translate across to CD's as you now have the CD, CD-R & CD-RW the latter being re-recordable but will not play in early CD players as the laser level out from the CD-RW is a lot less than a standard CD player can handle.

Quite a few people I know got caught out by using CD-RW in computers to record music only to find that the CD-RW was not playable in their car CD players etc.
Had to go and buy a more up-to-date CD player and then it was OK.
