That is a rather specialised tester...NOT just resistance.

It is a GEOHM EARTH Resistance tester primarily used to measure the effective resistance to the earth for earth stakes. Used lots and lots of them in PMG/Telecom days.

Absolutely essential for anyone banging in earth stakes and they need to know just how good an earth they actually had. We got many nasty surprises trying to provide GOOD earths to country exchanges and when in vogue Telex machines that used earth return signalling.

It was an absolute No No to take the easy route & connect the Telex earth to the earth lead on the mains cord. Many was the time we had crazy operation of a Telex machine only to discover that whomever had installed the beast had used the Mains earth from the power cable.

When we measured the earth from the exchange test desk we had our DC meter going nuts & we then found about 30V 50Hz on that so called mains EARTH which was rather not a good earth at all.

Had a correct earth stake driven in at the site and hooked to the Telex and the 30V AC vanished & the Telex stopped its intermittent mutilation of the incoming and outgoing messages.

The Geohm was a very good bit of test gear.

Hi all.
The tester is back on the market due to transport difficulties.

Adopt this homeless instrument.
