Mine's the same. Those knobs are hopeless.

I have in sheer desperation drilled out the centre, of a couple of those & turned a new one & pinned it in the right place with a screw.

A drill is not the way to drill out the centre. Its Lathe, die grinder fitted with a cutting ball, or router bit (small).
