Love the (possibly original) tag attached to the speaker.

A fantastic radio. No other way to describe it. The new owner will be a lucky man, or woman.

I note that it now appears for posterity on Radiomuseum, courtesy of Sirwin.

An AWA C63A has been on Ebay for a few months now and has failed to sell, probably due to the high starting price. The starting price has come down a little but I'd say not enough to kick off a bidding war.

Also a fantastic radio.

After a few months, you'd reckon the seller would get a clue about not starting high and allowing bidders to go for it.

I note that offers are invited but, given the high Buy it Now price, I guess he wants at least $600 for it.

I used to shop at a joint called Photo Antiques when they were located in Camperdown. The place specialised in vintage cameras but also sold radios, records, gramophones, valves, Wireless Weekly magazines, etc. It was like stepping back in time to one of the old radio retailers that lined George Street in the 1940s. Almost every pay week I'd make it my business to pay a visit. Of course, this was in the days before the WWW became the norm for trading radios.

That shop often had coffin sets for sale and they did sell well despite very high pricing for the time. An original C63 with the loud speaker the owner purchased with it would have easily sold for $1,000.00 in 1991, also back in the days when classic radios took precedence over coloured Bakelite ones for populating the fine collections.

I think that because I was a collector at that time, I still favour a good timber radio over anything else, particularly if it was locally manufactured.

I'd guess that the number of potential buyers for coffin type sets would be decreasing every year.

I've never really been into them myself. The closest I ever came to one as a kid was in an uncle's house. It was in the cupboard beneath the stairs and hadn't been used for decades. I did ask him if I could have it and he said he said think about it. I never did get it, which is just as well as I'd have pulled it to bits anyway (as he probably suspected).

I have an interesting Grebe Synchrophase MU1 which I have intended to make a power supply for and fire it up for 10 years.............

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/grebe_synchrophase_mu1_1.html

I think the AWA early radios would be rarer and more collectable as they would have made a lot less than the American equivalents.
Its too bad its on the other side of Australia though!

Very interesting tuning and control knobs design on that model.

In the July issue of Radio Waves an auction of a member's (Lou Albert) collection was advertised. I've just printed out the catalogue for it and am amazed by the number of timber radios he's collected. There's over 300 lots to be auctioned over two days and also a market that will run after the auction on the Saturday and once the auction concludes on the Sunday.

Not that I have a large budget at the moment, I think I'll consider myself a starter and will stay at a nearby caravan park for the weekend. The extra bit of good news is that there will be plenty of food available on site!

For more detail please visit http://hrsa.asn.au/ and follow the links to the Lou Albert auction. Unfortunately I can't link directly to the page because the site is framed.

And the auctioneer Richard Begbie has now advertised it in the September issue of Silicon Chip.

Sounds like Uncle Tom Cobley and all will be at that one.

I am going to try and be at the Lou Albert auction. Work may get in the road however. It'll be a big two days there.
