Hi all,
Does anyone know the model number for this awesome little wooden cased AWA portable? I'd love to get one, but I don't have a clue what the model number is. If anyone has one of these or a PYE 12F-1, I'd be interested.

Fairly certain it is an AWA model P18.
It uses a Japanese chassis (made by NEC) and has a plastic case with a fake woodgrain effect finish.
You should have a bit more luck finding a P18 as they date from the mid 1970's and seem to work forever.

Awesome, thanks! I'm gonna keep an eye out know that I know the model number is. I had a feeling that the case was plastic. Is it a B&W or colour set?

Are they hard to find? I'd love to get one and would like to know of what my chances are of finding one.

It will take some patience and much searching to find one but you should be able to find one eventually. Might take 1 to 2 years of looking though!
Best place to watch would be Ebay or any rubbish collections. The problem with collecting 1970's era TV's is 99% of people think they are worthless junk and so they get thrown out without a second thought. It also means that the TV's really are almost worthless as very few people are interested in buying them.
I've found that if you want to get a certain model of TV you will never find one, if you just look for old TV's in general fate can sometimes surprise you and you will stumble across what you are looking for quite by accident.

Some of the fun in this game is the waiting. Perhaps fun is the wrong word - perhaps satisfaction after the big find is a better way of putting it.
I've been waiting for the jade green dial pointer in this wishlist of mine which predates these forums by about two years. I'm still looking for one though it is a $1,000.00+ radio and definitely worth waiting for one to pop up. The radio is a 1947 AWA Radiolette.
I've been told by many that it'll never happen though I do know someone who has a turquoise dial pointer. So why wouldn't someone out there have a jade one to spare? That's the way I look at it. It's just a matter of that person who owns a jade one finding out that there is a market for it.
I'm desperate enough to pay $150.00 for that humble dial pointer if it is original and in good nick. My ultimate goal is to get that ellusive dial pointer and then collect the remaining known Radiolette colour that I do not have for a complete working set of seven radios.
Sometimes we'll wait years for what we want and I give everyone here all necessary encouragement to follow through with their desires. I won't rest till I have that dial pointer and you can bank that on the Wales.

Thank you both for your advice! Time to sit back and hope like heck that I can track down an AWA P18 and PYE 12F-1
TV Collector: I used to frequently find 70's and 80's sets when I lived in town, but now we're in the country, very rarely would one pop up. I have contacted the local waste management facility in hopes of getting some vintage sets from them. I have had luck before with wishing for a particular set. About a half year ago, I was wishing for a little while that I'd find a Sony Trinitron. One afternoon, I found not one, but two. I kept one. I then saw a PYE 12G13 on ebay and really wanted one. About two months later I found one in an antique shop for $20. It's still my favourite!
Brad: I wish you luck finding your jade green dial pointer. What exactly is this? I frequent the antique shops looking for insulators and tellies, and I can keep an eye out for one for you.

First picture on the linked page. It is for a 1947 AWA Radiolette, model 500M.
Even though there'd be fewer than ten of these left in this colour, I reckon someone would have a pointer somewhere tucked away as a chassis generally survives even when a radio is dropped.

Well, I'll certainly keep an eye out for you Brad. I'm guessing the whole radio is jade coloured?

G'day Ben,
Not now fortunately. I've got everything on there except the green dial pointer and the HMV dial scale.

Promised photo. Also, a photo of the turquoise job. Two of Australia's truly rare radios here.
Note the slight marbling effect just above the speaker grille in the turquoise cabinet which is slightly bluer in the photo than in real life. I might replace these photos at the weekend if it is sunny and take the photos outside.
I'll probably get asked the big question so I'll answer it now. These radios are not for sale - at any price. I might be tempted if a VF model Holden Statesman in black or silver is parked outside my house with the keys mailed to me but even then it'd be a difficult decision.

Very nice radios!
On a different topic, does anyone know anything about TEMPEST vintage portable televisions?
My local TAFE (where I'm doing the electrotechnology course) has a dozen or so 12" TEMPEST TE-12M B&W televisions. They have a wood veneer plastic case, and appear to be quite a cheaply made 70's set (similar to the Conias and Konkas of the 2000's). Has anyone run into these sets before? They have both a VHF and UHF tuner.
Does anyone know if these are solid state or valve sets? I think they are solid state, but I forgot to closely inspect them...
I may be getting one or two, permission pending, so wish me luck!
Cheers,
Chris
