I bought this Airzone from the Goulburn HRSA meeting ( its the nice tombstone in the pictures ) . Never occurred to me that it had a problem as it was nicely finished and had a new 3 core cord fitted.

It sounded ok but wasn't a real stunning performer. Tonight I switched it on and decided to unravel the antenna wire. It all of a sudden went to full volume and I could not turn it down. On short wave there was nothing but in three different places on the dial it would create some form of feedback like a microphone too close to a speaker. I will pull the valves in the morning and clean the sockets , I don't think this will help with this situation but what do you think the problem could be.

Now I know it has this issue I am determined to get it fixed.

I'm not familiar with the radio, but the volume control problem should be easy enough to diagnose. Make sure the earthy end of the control is actually earthed. Make sure the control conducts and isn't burnt out.

One you've got that sorted out, then the SW problem can be looked at.

But before the antenna wire was unravelled , the volume control was fairly normal. It seemed that once there was more signal that things went haywire.
I do think that once I take the chassis out then the problem will be more evident. It may not have been fully recapped or maybe a dry joint .

There is a switch in the back of the chassis that does nothing and I am guessing it would be a sensitivity switch to go from distant stations to local stations . I am thinking that it has no agc or if it does then it's not working.

What year model are we with? Many of the early sets that used valves like 58 & before, controlled the volume using cathode bias. Some of the potentiometer's earthed via the control shaft. The ones that have that sort of set up & a Local / DX switch rarely have AGC. albeit I have seen an AWA "Special" with both.

The Local / DX switch is often in the antenna circuit. Its either a tapping or often a cap of around 68pF in series with the antenna

If it has a Plate detector AGC is unlikely.

Hi Carl, did you find the cause?
