Hi all,

I have the above radio built around 1950-51 and noticed the on/off rotary double pole switch works in the reverse direction to normal. Turning the shaft anti-clockwise turns it on and clockwise turns it off. It is a stand alone switch, that is, it doesn't have a volume/tone pot incorporated in it.

It's quite strange and I am forever turning it in the wrong direction. It's like having one tap in the house that turns the opposite direction to the rest.

It has Aerostat printed on it. Anyone had any experience with this behaviour before?

Thanks

In my view, Philips designers did some mighty strange things at times, and a backwards on/off switch would be high up on the list of unfathomables.

No, it's broken.

The rotor has skipped past a worn stop and the cam is flipping the switch toggle around the opposite way.
Aerostat pots and switches were not great but you can repair them, generally.

"mighty strange things at times"

Philips were dedicated to cost saving. Phillips originally had two ls. One was sacrificed to cost saving.

They also produced versions of valves that facilitated radio wiring savings, having different internal connections. One of their indicator valves let the smoke out of my valve tester as a result of this practice.

Thanks Ian. I thought it may be broken too so I removed the back and it's functioning as intended. I have another chassis from the same model but the switch mechanism is missing leaving only the shaft and mounting plate. From what's left it looks like the same switch though so I expect it's the original switch fitted and not a retrofit.

I was just curious if anyone else has seen this before, it just seems completely illogical. Thanks everyone for your replies Smile

Tippy I have a chassis from a jubilee. I can see if the switch is ok and you can have it. My email is unhidden so drop me a line if interested.

Marcc, you are right, I watched a YouTube of a HMV 62-52 Nipper repair and the switch is turned on by rotating it anti-clockwise, I have never seen it before, you learn something everyday Smile

Thanks everyone for your input, I will contact Carl and see if we can work something out with his spare switch for my second chassis (which, no doubt, works in reverse)

I have one of those Nippers & must have overhauled a dozen of them, they are popular.

they [model 65-52] are popular

Yep, they must have sold thousands of them. Many found at HRSA auctions, etc, but often with missing/no knobs.
